By MICHAEL RUBINKAM, Associated Press Writer

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA - Rock star, and football fan, Jon Bon Jovi (news) is now co-owner of the Philadelphia Soul, an Arena Football League expansion team.

"I'm a football fanatic. I love football, always have," the New Jersey native said Monday. "It's the only sport I really live and breathe."

His partner is real estate developer Craig A. Spencer, whose properties include the five-star Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia, where Bon Jovi spoke about his lifelong love of football and his plans for the Soul.

The announcement was made Monday. The Soul will begin play next season in the Wachovia Center and Wachovia Spectrum.

With Ron Jaworski as the President, what chance do you give this new team of succeeding here?

While driving up to NY yesterday, I was fortunate to hear him doing the AM Radio circuit (and using the same opening line of "going through football withdrawl" on each). Never knew the guy was such a football fan.

This looks good on paper, and more importantly it looks like they actually gave it some thought. Good name, good personnel, charismatic owner.

I know the AFL was hot on getting NFL owners involved to demonstrate the stability of the league, but having some famous (and committed) stars would give it even more flair. Jon could be just the start... outside of some of the comedic ideas (Gene Simmons??? Bruce Willis???) there are sure to be some entertainment types out there who might like a taste of it.

But in the end, one must remember it's only arena football. Nothing will supersede the NFL in this town.

But superceding the NFL isn't the point. The arean league seems to be a more local minor league for the NFL.

Would you be interested in trying out for something like this?
