Default Bike shops- Any Recs?

I see a lot of bike shops in Center city, but I don't know anything about them. I need to just a get a good cheap tune up on an old mountain bike to get around town. Any greasemonkey recommendations? A place with a good well priced helmet selection would be good too.

I can't speak for any of the bike shops in the city, but in the Cherry Hill area, Danzeisen & Quigley is where I usually go for bike-related items.

I don't know how they stack up price-wise, but their staff is very friendly and helpful, which is important if you don't have a lot of experience or knowledge on bicycles.

One of the things I've noticed in my recent trips to Philly is that the city appears to be very bike-friendly.

I assume that riding on the street vs the sidewalk is not allowed, just like in other cities, but I don't see cops moving people off the sidewalk the way they do in New York.

I don't ride well enough to ride in the street -- particularly on Philadelphia's narrow streets when they're full of traffic! I'm still debating whether or not to bring my bike when I move there in a few weeks.

But anyway, just wondered... am I right about this? Is Philadelphia a bike-friendly city?

D&Q in Cherry Hill is good. I've bought 2 bikes for my parents from these guys and they were GREAT!

On Spruce st, between 15th and 16th is a little know shop called Frankenstein or Frankenshop or Franken something. It is in the basement of a building in the middle of the block on the North side of the street. It is tiny, and difficult to get your bike down the steps, but well worth it. They can do it all and their prices are resonable. It might be between 16th and 17th. Not sure.

I love riding in traffic. It's thrilling to zip around city hall with cars all around, dodgeing in and out of cars.

philly can be very bike friendly. some areas aren;t though. there's much more room for bikes on the sidewalk here than in nyc though it is illegal. nyc has people cluttering up the sidewalks; wlthough mike bloomberg is doing his best to put an end to that. more room for his limo.

Thumbs down

When I first moved here I didn't know anything about bikes. I stepped into Frankenstein Bike Works (see below in this thread), and the jerk there completely ripped me off on worthless Iron Horse bike that is falling apart completely after only 5 months! He also sold me a helmet that actually broke when I dropped it lightly on the ground. This guy is a total sleaze. If only I had the money back now that I originally spent there, I could get myself a decent bike now...

Oh well, my fault I guess for not doing the research. Point is, Frankenstein is dishonest and their bikes are terrible!
