This Evening in Manayunk
Soon after I arrived to a bench in Manayunk with my visuals, Johnny (aka “HillBilly”) came over with his dog, Cody. Three weeks ago, Johnny was in tears because his dog “ran away” five days prior. He said that no one cared for him, etc. I told him that Jesus had kept his heart beating and lungs breathing for 58 years. I asked him if he would like me to pray for him—that we might be able to get Cody back. He assented.
Jesus answered that prayer. On 9/1/08, I put the following words out on PhillyBlog.com: “Last evening, 8/31/08, I met Johnny Parker, who calls himself ‘Hillbilly.’ He apparently lives in a tent near the railroad tracks on the other side of the river. He informed me that he could not read and, with tears in his eyes, said his dog, Cody (a Dotson Miniature American Husky), had run away 5 days ago. He had had him for 18 years. I told him that I would call SPCA on Tuesday to see if one had been found, but has anyone on this blog seen a stray dog?--or taken one to a shelter? The man has lived in this area for 45 years and has a long beard.”
A person wrote a private message: “Hi -- I saw your note - and did see a lost dog today in Manayunk. I was kayaking on the Schuylkill. I started from Kelly Drive. After paddling for a while (an hour), I saw a dog on the left side of the river bank (the side closer to the highway), a little ways before the Green Street bridge. I couldn't get close to the dog because of rocks & such, and wasn't sure how I could get the dog in the boat etc. It was an older dog, red / brownish of medium size with short legs. I googled the dog breed you stated and didn't come up with an image -- so I am not sure it is the dog you are looking for. Please call if you think this might be the dog you are searching for. Thank you - Lxxx 215 xxx-xxxx.”
I went and found Johnny and told him that his dog had been seen, and guess what! I talked with Johnny for about 40 minutes this evening, and Cody was with him the whole time!
Johnny described himself this evening as an “alcy” (alcoholic). I asked him if he wanted to change. He was hesitant. I gave him my phone number if he decided he wanted to change. He has a daughter and granddaughter.
If you would like to see a picture of Johnny and his dog, just ask. Before we parted, I prayed with HillBilly again. He seemed willing.
Then I met Chris and Lauren. They seemed interested in talking the test I offer. (You can see my offer in the picture I took of Johnny and Cody this evening.) When I asked Chris what he would say if he were to die and be asked by his Maker, “Why should I let you into my heaven,” Chris asked if there was a right answer. I said yes, and both seemed interested in taking one of my tracts. It explains how a person can get into heaven. (If you would like to see it, let me know.)
Another man sat, drank something (Starbucks coffee?), and smoked a cigarette. I think he was thinking of talking with me, as I had seen him before (observing me). He did not seem to have the courage this evening, however. Maybe he’ll come over next time.
Various people pass, see the sign, but say nothing. One fellow said “Hello” and asked if he passed. I told him I didn’t know as he didn’t take the test. One woman said, “Yes, I’m going to heaven,” referring to herself.
Finally, Jeff stopped. He was from Virginia but was visiting his mother who lives in Manayunk. He knew the answer to the question and took one of my tracks. He was interested what church I belonged to. I told him; he said he might give the tract to his mother. I gave him one of our Reasons to Reject Evolution booklets for himself.
I was on Main Street for about 2 hours this evening (7-9 pm). It was a lovely evening in Philly.
