Good point Zog,

A lot of people use Saturdays and Sundays for sleeping in, spending time with family and other recreational activities.

I found it interesting that Americans spend a lot more time at work than most Europeans and many other countries in the world.

If I am not mistaken, I think the figure I heard was that the average American- over the course of their working life spends the equivalent of almost ten years more time working than Europeans.

Thus, many Americans find it difficult to make time for other activities besides work and family, and occasional recreation.

Are there others out there who feel this way?

If so, is it the timing of when worship services are generally held, or is it the fact that it is just one more thing to fit into one's busy schedule, and valuable time off?

Just curious.

Peace,

John

I have often wondered why very few groups have looked to use technology to help foster fellowship and worship? What about online webcasts of sermons and services?

Steve,

Many of the congregations that are growing and attracting young adults are doing just what you mentioned- using audio visual technology like powerpoint, as well as images, and even flim clips, as well as cool Flash websites.

The online sermons and webcasts are also being done to some degree, but that requires some special equipment from what I understand, that many churches probably don't have yet.

I think you're right on with all that- congregations need to make their worship experiences relevant to today's generation, and effective use of technology is certainly a part of that, though not the total picture.

Peace,

John

You know what I would love to see...a blog from a minister/pastor/priest/rabbi/etc. about their life and showing that they are a normal person. Too many times people have stereotypes about who and what these people are like and it is often very far from the truth.

I haven't answered the poll, because my religion doesn't have weekly services. I do attend services regularly. They're closer to every two weeks the way it works out, though. There's no good answer in the poll for that.

Steve,

The Mormon(Latter-Day Saints) church offers its' bi-annual General Conference over the internet. The Mormons also offer BYU-TV over the internet. BYU-TV offers television shows, sermons, firesides, and other LDS related viewing. The Mormons are really big on reaching their flock. There are 11 million Mormons, more then half are outside the USA.

I'm not sure I'm convinced by the "scheduling conflict" issues, especially with the sleeping-in argument. I mean, have you looked at some of these church service schedules? Some of them it looks like a bus schedule the number of services they do each weekend. Maybe SEPTA could learn a thing or two...

I'm a recent convert to Baha'i. So recent, in fact, that I had to look up on their website when I'm supposed to go to church. j/k. Sort of. There's no "holy day" for Baha'i but I think the faith tends to follow the Friday afternoon tradition from Islam. Also, I'm supposed to recite one of three obligatory prayers each day and do free meditation each day. I should get to doing some of that, eh?
