Welcome Bud!

Then Saul said, "Thus shall you say to David, 'The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.'"
1 Samuel 18:25 ESV

Speaking of dirty hippies... why is it that modern day Christians are the most clean cut and squeaky clean? To the point of irrational loathing of modern day hippies.

Exactly!

I think RELIGION by itself (without personal spiritual practice and faith) is a cultural vestige. FAITH and SPIRITUALITY, on the other hand can be dynamic, meaningful and deeply transformational.

Jesus never set out to start a new religion, and Christ(ianity) was not called as such until at least a generation after Jesus was executed. Religion without meaningful spiritual faith is a stale, irrelevant institution; spirituality without community or shared participation risks becoming inward-focused self gratification.

Two boys were walking home from Sunday school after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, 'What do you think about all this Satan stuff?'

The other boy replied, 'Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It's probably just your Dad.'

Very interesting indeed...

Sometimes I wonder if this is how all religions are made....just fast forward 100 years, presto..instant faith.

You can see it happening before your eyes with Scientology.

There were two kids and they drove their parents crazy with their behavior - acting up, being destructive, etc.

The parents tried everything they could think of and when nothing else helped, they went to the Priest and asked for his help.

The priest said, "The problem is that they don't know that Jesus is in their hearts and watching them all the time and sees all the bad things they are doing. Let me talk to them separately and see if I can get them to behave."

The parents agreed and the priest took the first boy into a room and said to him, "Where is Jesus?" When the boy didn't respond, the priest said louder, "Where is Jesus?" The boy didn't know what to say and the priest banged his bible and yelled "Where is Jesus!?" The boy was so scared by this behavior that he ran out of the room and hid. When the second boy found him, he asked, "What happened in that room?"

The first boy responded, "I don't know, but it seems they have lost Jesus and they think we have him!"

(Ok - this sounded better when my cousin told it. Hope I got enough right to make it funny.)

I don't think it is quite that simple- there has to be some compelling claim of spiritual truth and set of traditions and practices that people can grasp and integrate into their own understanding of life beyond the scientifically quantifiable- getting back to beliefs about questions of ultimate meaning and such...

Personally I think it is a huge stretch to call Scientology a mainstream "religion" in any sense of the word, although its proponents would certainly like people to believe as such. Scientology is clearly a dangerous mind control cult trying to masquerade as a legitimate religion.

If you want to read about the bizarre beliefs, manipulative practices, and mind control tactics of scientology Operation Clambake is a site run by persons who have escaped from the cult or had family members who have done so. Some of it is pretty shocking stuff...
