Default Sunday school

My husband and I are Catholic and plan to raise our children as Catholics as well. My daughter will be attending a non- Catholic school and that leaves us with a need for "Sunday school instruction". A few questions: What age is appropriate to begin? Besides our local parish, are there other places for instruction? Are there any after-school programs in the center city area? i should add that we are fairly liberal Catholics- we follow most church traditions but disagree with its soc.ial judgements. I appreciate any insight you may have. Thanks

Default Maybe not on Sunday...

I am no longer Roman Catholic (sorry for being fussy but I am Episcopalian and we call ourselves "Catholic" as well. Anglican Catholic, not Roman Catholic). I teach in a public school and lots of my students go to CCD classes. That's Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, the equivalent of "Sunday School." The thing is, my students seem to go one night a week, not on Sunday. When I went to parochial school myself, my friends in public and private school all went to CCD classes at night. Check with your parish and see when the CCD classes are held. I'm curious as to whether any Roman Catholic parish has "Sunday School." Anyone know?

Hello!

I am Episcopalian myself. I went to Episcopal School as well as Catholic.

I don't recall the parishes I went to...nor the parishes my son goes to having Sunday School.

The ones that I know about that didn't is St. Rita's of Cascia, St. Casimir of Lithuania, St. Thomas Aquinas or Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As for the appropriate age. The children in my son's schools started their instruction into becoming Catholic in 2nd grade with Penance then Confirmation in 3rd. Some Catholic Schools do 3rd grade Penance and Confirmation in 4th.

Hi OP

We attend St. Joseph's at 4th and Walnut. We have 2 girls and attend the 9:30 mass on Sunday mornings. It is a family mass and there is a children's liturgy, split up into an under 5 crowd and an over 5 crowd. In addition, starting in 1st grade, they attend St. Mary's for CCD. It is Tuesdays from 3:30 till 4:30. My oldest is in 2nd grade and having her communion in a few weeks.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Also, I don't know which parrish you attend, but St. Joe's is run by Jesuits and is fairly liberal and socially active. We have a wide variety of races and family mixes and everyone is welcomed. No firey, judmental homilies, either :o)

Am catholic, and ever since I can remember talking I went to Sunday school. You are taught many things but I can only remember a few things .....I suggest to begin early because by the time I did my confirmation I was 15!! And according to my mother am not done yet, the M word seals the deal.....
