Default Should Burqas be banned?

Police bring in 2 in connection with 'burqa bandits'

Robbers in the head-to-toe garb have held up businesses in W. Phila. and elsewhere. A raid netted a gun and clothes.

By Natalie Pompilio

Inquirer Staff Writer

Two people were in police custody yesterday after an early-morning raid on a West Philadelphia home netted clothing, a gun, and other goods possibly belonging to the so-called burqa bandits.

In recent weeks, robbers wearing burqas - traditional head-to-toe Muslim garb that covers the wearer's face - have held up three businesses near the University of Pennsylvania. The raid was directly connected to those robberies, Penn police said.

"These are very serious crimes where people were robbed at the point of a gun, and some of the victims were tied up," said Chief Mark Dorsey of the University of Pennsylvania Police Department, which conducted the search along with detectives from the city's Police Department.

More than 20 businesses and four banks citywide have been robbed by burqa-clad thieves in recent months. A link to those cases is still being investigated, police said.

Angelika Jones, 19, is being booked in connection with two of the Penn-area incidents on charges including robbery, aggravated assault, and making terroristic threats. Another 19-year-old is being held on a parole violation but is a suspect and will likely be charged. Two other men were also questioned.

Tips from community members prompted the search of the home, near 40th and Market Streets, Dorsey said. Penn and city police patrol the area on bicycle and know the people who live and work there, Dorsey said.

"They took this personal, and they've been working around the clock to gather information," Dorsey said. "We felt all along there was a connection to the neighborhood, because of the way they'd escaped very quickly."

The Penn businesses robbed were a pizza parlor, a Chinese restaurant, and a small grocery, he said. All the businesses are in the 40th and Market Streets area. Penn police patrol the campus and surrounding area.

The bandits hit one business as it was opening, the other two late at night. In two cases, the robbers bound employees with rope.

I think the question comes from a position of bigotry. :what_is_:

Sort of like asking whether ski masks should be banned - which are used in far more robberies.

It is important to note, however, that this current string of robberies has been conducted by people wearing burqas. Whether the perps are islamic is another question. It would seem to be pretty stupid for muslims to wear burqas while doing the crimes.

That's silly - this isn't France.

If you're going to ban those, you might as well ban trench coats, which can just as easily hide weaponry, and, as Chris points out, ski masks (or any other kind of mask), which can conceal identity as well.

so niel, would you get nervous if a couple people wearing ski masks walked intoa store where you were shopping or would you think it was normal?

Of course, but that's no reason to "ban" them, i.e. forbid them from being made or sold entirely. I'd be pretty nervous if some guy came walking into a store clutching a large knife, but I don't think we need to ban all cutting implements. You can't legislate away aberrant or threatening behavior.

Which is why I laughed when Commissioner Johnson mentioned banning handguns last week.

I think you misunderstood. Ban them from being worn in public. You can't walk around with a large knife in public either.

To ban them in public would be a restriction of religious freedom that could become a slippery slope.
