Hello. I am new to this. Does anyone remember a group of young people known as the "Philadelphia Jesus People / New Testament Church" that was active from about '71 until '78? They were part of the "hippie" Jesus Movement that began on the west coast around 1970. The group met at the Church of Atonement , Walnut La. and Greene St. in Germantown on Friday nights and eventually at the beautiful old church at Wayne Ave. and Harvey St. about 2 blocks away on Sunday nights. They had a commune-all male on Uber St nr 20th and Wingohocking in a 3-story rowhouse (long since been torn down and the neighborhood was dangerous even back then).Their leader was a young African American man even though the group was predominately white. If anyone has any recollection of this group it would be great.

I'd like to add not long before the group dissolved, the commune folded and they relocated their meeting place from Germantown to somewhere in the lower Northeast. They had changed their name to the "Community of Christ " or something like that. Some of the commune dwellers , including the leader moved into a couple of rowhouses in the 5000 block of Charles Street. These changes took place aound '76. Also a few guys and a female singer in the group formed a folk-rock band called " Emmanuels Children" and they would hold free concerts in various churches and small venues around the Phila. area. Does anyone remember that particular band?
