Default Fundamental Evangelical Christianity Should NOT ...

... oppress, persecute, defame, harass, ridicule, or discriminate against GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL/TRANSGENDER people.

We all deserve to live as free citizens, first class citizens, afforded equal opportunity, with dignity and respect. All families and relationships involving consenting adults deserve recognition. No one regardless of his or her religious beliefs should seek to deprive a fellow citizen his or her civil rights.

What most people mean when they say this is: they don't like religion and politics to mix when they disagree with the politics.

When its the abolitionist movement and fundamental Christianity, that's ok.

When it is ending slavery and genocide in Sudan, that's ok too.

If you post your thoughts within the thread and take the time to answer those who discuss your topic, then you might get a little respect. Otherwise, it's all just spam.

I wholeheartedly agree, urbanswirl, and would even broaden that statement to include all fundamentalists- whether they be religious, civil or secular. We desperately need leadership in America who can recognize all people from many diverse backgrounds, demographics, and belief systems and govern in a way that builds bridges and seeks mutual, peaceful understanding.

It is exactly that kind of leadership, by the way, that Jim Wallis (who is a progressive Christian evangelical leader) calls for in his two recent books:

The Great Awakening

God's Politics

The thing is, all of those things only use religion as a front. Religion has NOTHING to do with those thing(outside of fundamental Christianity).

And if you need to use religion to get people to believe in something, you aren't doing it right.
