All the trappings of the Catholic Church, none of the guilt.

It's like being Anglican, except you don't have to answer to the Queen.

It means you belong to a church that exists because one man wanted to divorce his wife and another group of men wanted to divorce their king.

Some Episcopal churches have no trappings at all (check out Old Swedes on Delaware)- no statuary, stained glass, Others are very ornate like St. Luke's in town or St. Tim's in Roxborough. Similarly, services vary greatly from low church with modern language, no smoke, no bells, no crucifix to high church with all of the aforementioned. High church has far more trappings than modern Roman services. It's more like Romans in the pre-Vatican II era. Oh, and at my Episcopal church, we consider ourselves Catholic as well, Anglican Catholic, not Roman Catholic. And the whole splitting off thing was about more than divorce. It was also about the secular ruling power assumed by popes.

By the key aspect of Episcopalianism for me is that one of our basic tenets is REASON. Our own reason. It's less didactic than Roman and Protestant churches. That and the fact that when my daughter looks up to the altar and asks if women can be priests I proudly say "YES, and mommies, too.

Finally, I'd like to say that guilt is everywhere, the Romans have no monopoly on that!

I'm all about number 1. "No matter what you believe, there's bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you."

A few of my friends in our parish call it the "Don't ask, don't tell rule." Druid, divorced and remarried RC, agnostic who likes some good music and company on a Sunday morning, it really doesn't matter. Peace be with you.

Speaking of Episcopal/Anglican churches, are there any in the Philly metro area that have a blend of traditional and contemporary; liturgical and sacred yet alive with the sense of the Holy Spirit? It seems that its either one or the other with Episcopal churches (and in Northeast America its usually only traditional/liturgical). I attended churches with these blends in San Francisco and the mid-west and have sought for something similar here. Would love to hear of any recommendations!

Please you stole everything from the traditions of the Catholic church. So unoriginal. Just come back into the fold already. Or split from us completely and use none of our thousands year old traditions. GET YOUR OWN! Stop being pretenders. Come up with something original...not so easy yeah..takes couple hunderd years at least. Keep trying though..may get something in 400 years or so...
