Depends on the church regarding the elitist holier than thou attitude. I know what you mean and I think it is mostly in the suburban areas where I HAVE experienced it. Also, they are dry like toast.

You got me on McGreevy...I want to know who let him in.

Regarding Bennison though. In the Diocese of Phila. When we heard about this, word got to different parishes, 99% of the parishoners took IMMEDIATE action and wanted him out. Some went as far as not paying dues.

You are correct....as we remember Camp What-a-Piti. But we acknowledged it...he is out and as of right now not considered a Bishop and hopefully he will be found guilty.

We didn't cover it up and try to transfer him somewhere else. Wouldn't wish that on our worst enemy. Hey maybe he will become Catholic...We take McGreevy and the Catholics can have Bennison!!

  • Many Episcopal churches that I have visited have an elitist holier than thou attitude where only people with money and/or connections are welcome.

St. Peters is at 3rd and Lombard.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I guess I'm looking for a church like All Angels in NYC. Their website is currently under construction so I can't post a link, although they do have a blog (http://allangelschurch.wordpress.com/). They are an Episcopal church, but I guess you could say they are pretty contemporary. Its not that I need a "contemporary" church (because I know there are other denominations that are way more contemporary). I was raised Anglican and identify intimately with Anglican traditions. I love the sacredness of the Episcopal church, but often it just feels too stiff. All Angels is the only Episcopal/Anglican church that I have to on the east coast that feels really alive.

I'll look into some of the suggestion that were posted. Thanks again!

As a former parishioner at St. Asaph's I can tell you that the church is very progressive and contemporary, with the contemporary having come after I left with a new rector. It's been a bastion of progressiveness for a number of years and the first openly gay person was ordained out of Saint Asaph's.

The rector is openly gay and has "shaken" things up as it were. The church itself is quite beautiful; at the time I was in the parish, it was mostly middle/upper middle class, highly educated - I suspect it is much the same now, but I can't say for sure. There was much more diversity there than one would expect from most Main Line churches, although to categorize St. Asaph's as Main Line by today's standards is quite a stretch.

Have you been there yet?

Default P.s.

P.S.

I only left because my partner was attending a church in the Diocese of New Jersey and in the ordination process. It had nothing to do with the new rector who hadn't even been called when I decided to go to New Jersey.
