YMCA, 1700 block of Christian. Or, at least, if I start going that's where I'll go. Several folks whose opinion I trust swear by it and it's relatively inexpensive -- $75 sign-up fee and then $35-$45 a month. (I forget the exact cost.)

Ive been a member at the YMCA for the last 3 years and saw them through the beautiful renovations. The top floor is all new weights and machines. the first floor has treadmills, bikes and other cardio machines. Very clean! Matter of fact Will, the guy who runs the gym will yell at ya if you dont wipe off the machine or bench after using it. He is the brother of the former eagles running back Wilbur Montgomery. He always will give you tips or advice if youre not doing something right or need info. There are steam rooms and a pool available as well. the cost is $44 a month. I forget what the sign up fee is may be cloer to 100 these days. PLus they are open 7 days a week now with hours 12-5 om sunday

Here's another vote for the Christian Street YMCA.
I do cardio and weights Monday thru Friday mornings under Will Montgomery's guidance. He is the best trainer I've ever had, and I've worked out with several at 12th Street and Pennsport (which has a new name now). I can't believe he's there, and you don't have to pay extra to be trained by him. The whole place is spotless. The pool looks great but I haven't had a chance to use it or the stream room. There's also a good selection of classes. Everyone there is very nice--both staff and members. Call and make arrangements for a tour to check it out. |

My boyfriend also loves the YMCA... I believe they have a month-to-month option, so if you decide that you'll be busy or out of a town a lot one month, you can take a hiatus from your fees, then start up again later.
They also have a pool, which is difficult to find in the city. I know the Bellevue has one, but that's super expensive... and I think the Sweat on Walnut has one, as well, but it's also more expensive. I go to the Rittenhouse Suare Fitness Club at 20th and Rittenhouse... I get a free membership from work, so I have to take advantage of it... I heard it's also pretty cheap for those who don't get the work membership. They don't have a pool, though, and they are pretty tiny, crowded before and after work, and it's often kind of muggy and humid inside... I'd imagine the Y is nicer... but I haven't personally been there.

Check out the BC/BS - Keystone benefit. I believe if you carry that insurance your "Y" membership may be free or almost free, with the proviso that you work out a minimum number of days per month.
