I am always picking up trash that seems to gather at me steps but the only trash can that i noticed at 17th and christian that is gracefully managed by the person(s) a couple doors up from that corner deff. helps. i watch the kids get out of school every day stuffing their faces and then throwing the rappers right on my pavement.....put a trash can on the corner of the school and i bet that will help out...I never see anybody outside maintaining that school.

I drove through Point Breeze a few times on Saturday, and it looked great! Well, clean at least.

For what it's worth, one of our regular "street guys" came by on Saturday with an armful of the big paper trash bags form the City saying he was working for Universal. He was offering us bags (and I'm sure looking for an extra hand-out too) but since we already had enough of our own, we didn't take him up on his offer.

How about in front of the 7 or more vacant homes on the 1500 block of Christian? They usually do shovel their sidewalks of snow, but that's it.

The citywide cleanup has set a national record for a one-day, one-city cleanup, and it exceeded its goals incredibly -- more than twice as much trash picked up as forecast.

for those of you near the 700 block of 16th Street, i'd like to let you know that I embarked on some calls for the properties 719 - 731 this morning whose garbage, since last Thursday, has been tumbling through our block. So far I've reached two property owners who, on the whole, were nice enough and ensured clean up by noon today.
One suggested a block clean up and that he/the mgmt company would be willing - and ever power wash - and I said thanks, not without tipping him to the extraordinary work of other neighbors on April 5th. Another owner said that he is upset to know about the garbage and is a very "present" property owner...I said, ahem, then where were you for the past 4 days? I've been doing what I can as time as allowed me in the past 3 days - I have a ratty 8 x 10 absolutely disgusting red shag carpet in our garbage , going out tonight, that was plopped on our sidewalk. gross. grrrr! Edited to add: Just got through to the right people at PHA for 721 S 16th - and while it took a while, I found a woman who was very pleasant and willing to help, promising action of some sort today, and highly encouraged me to continue to be in touch with them! Good stuff.

I also filed a complain with the Philadelphia Police Department this week in their sanitation division. The block is absolutely disgusting. Having guests or family in from out of town and walking around is a disgrace not to mention it's awful trying to bike, walk, commute up 16th st.
I've seen wheelchairs having to go IN the street, while traffic is coming because people are putting out couches, boxes, bags of trash beginning the Wednesday night (a full week before trash day). Hopefully some of your neighbors will take control of their trash. -Will |
