I don't know if you're old enough but, do you remember a store owned by an old woman named Gingee? She was on the 2300 block of Grays Ferry and kind of looked like a gyspy and it was some sort of novelty store. I got a marrionette of the Tramp from "Lady and the Tramp" from Her back around 1957. I think she was still there into the mid 60's.

Do you remember the name of the drugstore? I have "Youngs" stuck in my head but I don't think that's right.

It was still there when we moved into the neighborhood, and in fact I had one prescription on record there. It closed shortly after the Eckerd opened up and transferred its prescriptions there.

I humbly stand corrected. I debated the spelling. ...

the only gingie that i remember is the one lady , yes she did look like a gypsy, but i remember her stand on 23 rd st, between lombard and pine, i think it is waverly im not sure, she had the corner property on the little street, as a matter of fact the person who bought it from her family i guess, was non other than Sam Switzenbaum, he fixed it up, was beautiful house, yes the same Sam who has the JFK building on Schuylkill Ave, i knew some Kellys out of the pocket, there were 2 families of Kellys in the pocket, my father knew all of them as did my granfateher, he was a ward leader, my fathers family was from 21st and st albans, st charles

Cleanman and Dogfaceboy, do you have any photographs that you can share with us? Again, I'd be happy to scan them for you.

SOSNA has/had a grant to put together an architectural catalog of the neighborhood. I have the grant material at home because I said I would help. I will look through it tonight, but it would be great if we could as a community complete the grant and have a nice multi-media presentation to use for PR and just overall neighborhood pride. I'm thinking Now and Then photos, some oral histories from long timers, maybe a little video and some appropriate background music:

Gamble/Huff
some local jazz, (does anyone have any recordings of the late great Nate Wiley and The Crowd Pleasers?)
Marian Anderson
any local gospel?
some of our current artists, which I guess would be The Roots...

I've got the whole thing planned out in my head, if only I had some talent, or knew any talented people.......

Any pictures that I'd get are more than likely pictures of family members.

I doubt if we have any Historical landmark shot.

My Mother just passed away and we'll be going through her stuff over the next months I'm sure.

I'll see what we have and get back to you.
