Default From PDAC17: Security System Scam

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - 2:41 PM EDT
Phila. citizens targeted by security system scam

Philadelphia Business Journal

The city of Philadelphia is alerting residents about a scam that uses the offer of a free security system as a lure.
City spokesman Doug Oliver said residents have been contacted and told that the city is working with GE & Icon security systems to offer free alarm systems, which is not true.
Citizens are urged to call police if they are approached with a similar sounding offer.

These guys may have just knocked on my door.

EDIT: I called 911 and, much to my surprise, to police came quickly (in less than 5 minutes) and actually stopped these guys on the next block.

So, does anyone know what the actual scam is? ID theft, casing for break-ins, something less sinister?

Really? These guys came to my house yesterday and I listened to their "deal" - they said they gave free security systems to 5-6 people on my block (They had their names and signatures and stuff). It was a young girl and a guy, they looked to be in their 20's, had polo shirts on with GE logo, etc. They looked legit to me! They were telling me about new technology in security systems, how theirs doesn't hook up to a land line, it hooks up to a cell phone.

They didnt' have a brochure to give me (which I thought was wierd) but the girl gave me her name and phone number if I decide I want to sign up later....I need to tell me neighbors about this!

If they were legit, I'm sure they had no issue explaining themselves to the police.

Default Car break-in

A white Camry was broken into on the 2400 block of Bainbridge at about 9:30 tonight (July 4). They caught the guy, but the car has out-of-state plates and they are having trouble finding the owner, which will help them pursue prosecution. If you are or know the owner, call Detective McKenna at South Detective Division 215-686-3013.
