Just wanted to make this public on PB as well as the yahoo group, simply reposting....
My housemate was mugged at gunpoint in front of our house (1736 Catharine)last night at about 10:30 by two men in their early 20s. She took a cab to home to be safe, but the two young men were hiding behind the dumpster and construction fences at the house directly to our east (1734 Catharine). It appears they were waiting to ambush anyone who walked by. They grabed her, covered her mouth, and put a gun to her head before robbing her for $15 and her cell phone. We called the police right away. Luckily, the police apprehended one of the two suspects and found the loaded gun on his person. I talked to the contractors this morning about putting in a light and leaving it on at night for safety. A new contractor is taking over the job today or tomorrow - so I hope they will help make it safer. We're also going to start leaving our porch light on at night, but I'm not sure that's enough. Any other thoughts for making this area safer while construction is going on? Something strange is that there was a lot of the usual activity at the basketball courts right up until the mugging happened. Then it suddenly got real quiet. |

I think rather than random points of glaring light, this would underline the need for more attractive architectural and landscape lighting throughout the neighborhood. We have an up-lit tree and a warm porch-light on a dimmer so it provides a nice level of light that's sustainable throughout the evening.
If people generally looked toward things like uplighting trees and accent lighting on homes and businesses, the neighborhood would look great AND be much safer. Simply throwing on perma-noon lights in the park is probably not the answer. That being said, I am sorry to hear about your roommate. I hope she is doing well. |

Not my roommate luckily, just a message I saw on the SWCC yahoogroup and felt the need to pass on. I completely agree with lights etc. Using those eco-friendly bulbs outside is great but those lights need to be ~ 100W in order to provide real light. If you have a light outside your house, Lowes/Home Depot sells a cheap <$7 device which is a light timer for your bulb, no hardwiring required.
Lighting up those trees, businesses is also nice and does make the neighborhood much more pleasant. |

I wonder if maybe the SOSNA board would consider establishing lighting requirements as part of their zoning mission. Basically, there is no reason they couldn't require landscape lighting (street trees) for all properties, accent lighting for the sidewalk, and some sort of 24-hour shop-window lighting for businessness (just enough to detract vandals). |

Gee, its no surpise to me that somebody got hurt Monday. The City keeps giving the drug family a permit to shut off 16th and Catharine St. so they can have a free-for-all down there all day and night every Memorial day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. The permit is issued in some old ladies name, and a cute little girl goes out an collects the signatures. The party is 100% the drug dealer dudes party though. After his nitty-gritty little dealers and buddies got done drinking and eating all day (funny I never get an invite or a plate), they went down another block and robbed someone. If you don't enforce the small stuff, you create a lawless environment, and this is what happens. The last time they had a big part somebody got mugged over there too. At least 2 houses in the 1600 block are connected to this same family, as well as 3 in the 1500 block. That's not a "block party". It's only a party for the drug dude and his friends who don't live on the block; nobody else who lives on the block is invited. Why should we let 5 crappy little houses and their residents afflict the rest of use with their BS? Because the police don't want to enforce it? Because it's, "been going on for 30 years". Enough already. Just because they have some political connections and the lady at 1529 works in somebodys office, doesn't mean the vast majority of us (i.e. the rest of the neighborhood) have to put up with their crapola. Capt. Bethel is a nice guy but he hasn't don't **** for this block, or put so much as a dent in the drug sales at 16th and Catharine. And it isn't for lack of resources. It's for lack of will. These guys have connections and that's the only reason they are still out there.
