Default Hate Security Doors too...

The TV was mounted to the wall, in fact using 4-5' concrete screws and I had security bolts on wall mount. They are going to have some fun getting those off. They most likely destroyed the TV by literally pulling it off the wall with brute force.

I was reluctant to go with a security door and agree it is not in alignment with my vision of the neighborhood, but I realized I could have lost a lot more than a TV. Somethings, while material in nature, cannot be replaced due to sentimental value... I think it is sad that I need the extra security, on top of the alarm, to feel safe. While I have seen excellent progress in the neighborhood since I arrived, the truth is that it just isn't there yet.

Luckily, my home owner's insurance covered it all. But, I will not be replacing the 50' plasma. Mostly, because the security upgrades bit into my budget, but also due to the fact it is just to much of an eye catcher. I will suffice with a smaller TV and put it in the basement and plan on securing it even more this time....

Default Apologies to Phillyblog and also Thanks for the feedback

Sorry about three different thread postings (is my terminology correct?) regarding the burglary I was still a bit pissed when I was doing this so more than one was over kill.

Regarding the difference between burglary and robbery Mr. Brightside all I can say is that you are correct. Sorry about that. I think most laypeople understood though.

Thanks for the info regarding the reporting for the speakeasy. For the most part the place is relatively harmless so I have not reported anything to anyone but my concern is the customers that it attracts. I can't connect those customers to the burgularies or car break-ins but any reasonable person would at least have a suspicion. I will hold off on the reporting for now...but I am glad to have the right info at my disposal.

Mr. Brightside. You are right about the "Don't Snitch" comment as well. I was disappointed that no one on the block stepped up being that the block is so small and someone is usually always on the step or has their head out the window. We tend to look out for each other.

I know that this crime does not compare to what "Don't Snitch" is usually associated with. Murder. But this is crime is frustrating.

Again, thanks for all the comments and feedback. Much appreciated.

Personally I think burglary is a fact of life anywhere (I was burgled in Nutley NJ, one of the safest towns going, some years ago), and a steel security door would be a wise decision anywhere. If I lived anywhere else in Center City or even Rittenhouse I would still opt to have (a nice-looking) one.

Actually, Dr. G was right. He noted the difference between burglary and robbery and challenged the no snitching comments. At any rate, no big deal. You were understandably pissed!

Me too. And you can still see mine through my storm door.

(Actually, truth be told I hate my contractor-special "wood" door. But you get the idea.)

Just a reminder --

Urban crime is a fact of life, has been for centuries. We can work to minimize it through a variety of measures -- law enforcement, education, attitude adjustment. And we can work to reduce the chances that our families and our property will be targets.

But look around at those fancy nineteenth-century iron grillwork cellar window guards -- there are still some in our neighborhood, with more in the neighborhoods north of us. They're not there for ornamentation. They're there to thwart nineteenth-century burglars.

Default Two men shot at 17th and Washington -- shooter wearing PB Pirates cap

This is from last week's South Philly Review, from the Police Blotter, noting a shooting that occured at 17th and Washington Ave.

Two men where shot each in the leg after being robbed by a short, bearded man in a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap:

"An armed man shot two males both in the right leg after he mugged them. The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1700 block of Washington Avenue where the 30- and 38-year-old were walking, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives said.

The perpetrator approached the victims and demanded money before going through their pockets. All that was taken in the brazen heist was a cell phone valued at about $150. After swiping the phone, the offender fired one bullet into each of the victim’s legs, then fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Both men went to HUP, where they were treated and released.

The triggerman was described as black with a dark complexion, short hair, beard and stocky build; he had on a black Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap.

To report information, call South Detectives at 215-686-3013."

This is not remotely the story I was told by the Captain, it sounds like someone got their stories mixed up.

So . . . what was the story you were told?
