I don't draw that well.

As long as we're on the SWCC crime thread (and this is a subject change in mid-post), did anyone else see the piece in this morning's Inquirer about the special anti-gang, anti-violence initiative being prototyped in the 17th? I was slouching through the paper and all of sudden there were pictures of two of my favorite policepersons -- Kevin Bethel and Steve Johnson. I found it online, too --

I'd be real happy if they could find the bad boys of 23rd/24th Street pretty quick. It occurs to me that both of those streets point south so it's a straight shot back to Point Breeze for those bad boys after they've been their bad-boy selves.

Unfortunately, what stuck out most prominently for me was the line,

Quote:
Gang activity in South Philadelphia has increased in recent years,
with the Bloods and the Crips actively recruiting, officials said.
I realize my past few posts make me sound like a real downer but geez,
it's bad enough here already, and gangs barely register. Now we have gangs, too?

Some good news:

Quote:
Dear Concerned Citizen's,
As a follow up to our previous flier, there was an arrest made 1/16/08 of two persons caught in the very act of breaking into a car. They used two way radios to communicate with each other, this may cut down on these organized crime events.

THEFT FROM AUTO ALERT!
THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THEFT FROM AUTOS IN THE AREA

Make it Difficult to be a Theft from Auto Victim

• A Theft from Auto can occur any time of the day or night.
• Below are some preventive tips to help protect your vehicle and its contents:

1. LOCK YOUR VEHICLE: Completely close all windows and lock all doors.

2. ACTIVATE THEFT DETERRENT DEVICES: A theft deterrent device is a good investment for your vehicle, use it each time you leave your vehicle.

3. SECURE YOUR VALUABLES: Remove all valuables from your vehicle; do not leave them inside your car where they can be seen. If you must keep items in your vehicle, place them in your trunk before you reach your destination. Remove detachable face-plates from radios that are equipped with them.

4. PARK IN LIGHTED AREAS: At night time park only in lighted areas, offenders do no like to be seen committing a crime.

Call the police if you notice anyone walking along a street or parking lot looking into cars or touching cars or any other type of suspicious activity. Report it immediately and give a good description of any person you observe.

From what I understand, organized gangs have been on the upswing lately in many places, including the suburbs. Before we moved here from East Windsor NJ (an otherwise very safe & quiet little area near Princeton for those who don't already know), nearly two years ago, the Bloods & Crips were apparently making themselves known there too.

There was a snippet on this story on NPR this morning too. I almost drove off the road when I heard the sweet sounds of Officer Bethel talking about the crackdown on gangs in our neighborhood!

I believe the NPR story made some reference to probation officers being deployed with police officers as they patrol.

Definitely true. I worked in Trenton with members of the Bloods & Crips and their families. They exist all over--don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I had always heard Philadelphia didn't have an issue with major gang activity (Bloods, Crips & Kings), but didn't believe it for a second.

Don't worry! Captain Bethel is right "on their toes", and he means it!

We don't have the major gang presence seen in other cities. Kids here roll in neighborhood based sets/cliques.

Sounds to me like a market ripe for plucking by the big gangs.
