Just a quick update: I asked Officer Gibson (our community relations officer in the 17th district) about this last night & he asked me to email him with the details so he could check into it. So that's what I've now done, and will post again here if/when I get an answer with any more details.

From: Center City Residents' Association
Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT Community Meeting on Public Safety #2 Dear Neighbors: Last month I sent out an email advising you that we would be holding two meetings to discuss the escalation of crime in our neighborhood, and in the city as a whole. We are all most concerned. We held the first of the two meetings on October 26, 2007, where the chiefs of the local police districts spoke to us and responded to questions from the audience. The second of the two meetings will be held on JANUARY 17, 2008 in the Sanctuary Room of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion (Stevens Center), at 2111 Sansom Street (same location as meeting #1). Our speaker will be Lynne Abraham, The District Attorney of the City of Philadelphia. DA Abraham will make an address for approximately 20-30 minutes. She will take questions after her talk. We are very fortunate to have DA Abraham agree to meet with us. I am hopeful those of you who wish to attend will mark it on your calendars today. Please bring all of your questions with you, written on a card if possible. Hopefully, we will have time to recommend some strategies which may spark new initiatives! |

I was assaulted near the corner of 23rd and Catherine at 6:30 this evening. I was coming home from the South Square market with a few dinner items, walking briskly and alert as per usual – without headphones on. Two black males turned the corner onto 23rd and the younger of the two (16-20 yrs old, light complexion, clean shaven, 5’11’’, wearing light color Gore-Tex type jacket with dark shoulder stripe) called out “Hey Chicky”, lunged at me and proceeded to lock his arms around my waist, lifting me from the sidewalk and shaking me several times.
I screamed out to let me go over and over and he released me after about 10 seconds. As he let me go, he yelled out and questioned to his companion: something to the effect of why he wasn’t “come on -doin’ it too, like you said”. The companion (25-30 yrs old, dark complexion, full beard, 6’, black leather jacket) just smiled and walked away. The two kept strolling Northward up 23rd Street towards South Street. Nothing was taken from me and there were no visible weapons. I called 911 and a kind neighbor stayed with me until my boyfriend came running from home a few blocks away. We rode around in the police car for 15 minutes with no sightings of the two men. As a petite female in my early thirties, I am street-smart enough to be aware of my surroundings, walk with purpose and cross the street at any questionable moment. I may be labeled as an “easy target” due to my sex, weight and height: but please do not retreat into a false sense of security in our neighborhood. It can happen anytime and anywhere in this city – but it happened here in our neighborhood tonight. |
