ROBBERY ALERT from the 17th District:

In recent weeks we have experienced an increase in robberies in the area. Attached is a summary of the incidents as well as descriptions of the males involved. In at least two of the robberies the male has worn a black hoodie with a design on the back, in both cases he fled on a bike. 1,500 usc? does that mean 1.5k cash? is that a typo? did the victim have the united states code (USC) in his pocket?

How many more robberies and how many more drugs need to be dealt before the police does something about the suspicious characters that litter 22nd Street between Catherine and Fitzwater? Anyone who frequents these streets knows who the people are, they hang on the corners all day throwing trash, pissing and spitting all over the place, dealing drugs, smoking weed and looking shady. Lately I have repeatedly seen a groups of 2-4 young males (in addition to the usual suspects) "hanging" around looking up and down 22nd street wearing hoods over their heads (it isn't that cold!). What can we do to get rid of these people?

It's frustrating, to be sure. Pity the folks from the 17th, who are now being shot at by large groups -- the last one involved five guys shooting from a patrol car, at about the same time these other bad boys are working 21st and 22nd streets.

Anyone struck by how little ambition overall was shown by the criminals in this batch of robberies (except for the guys that got $1500)? Never thought I would use the word "ambition" and "criminals" in the same sentence, but there you go.

Not that this necessarily would have made a difference, but I'm also struck by how dark the neighborhood seems lately. Turn your porch lights on and encourage your neighbors to do the same...once it's dark it's dark...apparently it doesn't matter to these guys whether it's 6 p.m. or 2 a.m.

Oh, and here are the numbers to report defective street lights, if you are so inclined...

I wouldn't be surprised if this was either a person who works for tips and/or tends to carry a lot of cash for other reasons. For example, I've heard many pizza-delivery people who may (or may not) be illegal aliens have a distrust of banks (i.e. reportable income).

So from what I understand, both of these types of people are more likely targets of robbers. That is, a person dressed in all black (for example) might be assumed to be a waiter/waitress who just got off from work & so is likely to be carrying cash tips. Someone who looks to be of hispanic descent & perhaps dressed a certain way could be taken for a delivery person who might also be carrying a large quantity of cash. (However I've also heard that someone like this might not even report such a crime. Again, for example illegal aliens who might distrust authority.)
