I think this has been brought up before, I think my best bet if faced with a mugger is to quietly hand over whatever I have. So, I've simplified what I carry with me (credit cards, etc.) so I'll have less hassle to deal with if this situation occurs. I have even carried some extra cash separate from my purse or bag. I'm rarely out alone after dark, but when I am I keep track of who is around me. I think people (especially women) have a tendency to be overly trusting because they don't want to seem judgmental. For me, anyone who looks somewhat menacing (to me) gets some extra suspicion and I keep my distance.

Carrying a gun is not a personal option for me. If I ever feel I need one to live my daily life safely I will move--even if it means I need to move to Canada.

Default 17th District Community Meeting

A reminder that the 17th District is having its monthly "Block Representatives" meeting on 11/13 at 5:30 PM at the 20th & Federal Station, where they present a crime report to the community. If you're interested, get the information and complete picture (and advice) first hand.

Plus you can't get a permit to carry Mace in Philly; it's illegal for civilians. Isn't it ironic that only lethal force is permitted by law?

Why?...many people fought and died for this right.

I've lived all over the country- urban, suburban, rural. the places with the highest legal gun ownership I have always found to the safest (both statistically and just anecdotally...how I felt walking around, even though I knew (and saw) many people had guns on them). Most people were well educated on gun safety and knowledge, knew their rights, and knew what was illegal. I know the fewest amount of gun owners here in philly and it's become the murder capital of the country. I've never been swayed much by this issue, but after living here, I have to say that I'm starting to agree with the gun rights side of the argument.

The sad truth is that this violence that is tearing apart this city is because of the standards and values of the black community. You dont see white, asian, hispanic, or middle eastern communities having shoot outs in the middle of their streets.

I'm black and I haven't yet shot anybody. Race has less to do with it than you'd have us believe. But I understand why you focus on that aspect -- it is a nice catchy "turn key" explanation that requires no intelligent thought whatsoever.

And I have the right not to invoke that right. I'm not debating the right to own a gun, just stating my personal beliefs. Hence my use of the word "personal" in both of my posts.

Folks, may I respectfully point out that this is the "SWCC crime thread" and not the "Philadelphia and the Second Amendment" thread. While not in the least debating anyone's right to talk about the right to bear arms and the general nature of crime in the city, this thread was started and is sticky so that we can report crimes and security issues in this neighborhood.

I think there are many Second Amendment and "general crime" threads spread over Phillyblog.
