There is a thread dedicated to the car break-ins:

They did catch someone breaking into a lot of cars on Grays Ferry, but it seems he wasn't the only one doing it.

Car or house window? What time? East end or west end of the block?

We were home but we were watching a DVD and our neighbor was playing music, so we probably wouldn't have heard it anyhow, but I'm annoyed. I saw a youth standing on the steps of a house on the west side that I know wasn't his when I biked back from the Pathmark around 5:45; he was talking to some guys on the street.

Car window. Right in front of your house! It probably happened between 5:00 and 6:30.

Oh dear. It could very well have been those kids I saw hanging in front of the house next door to mine, presumably related to the kid standing on someone else's steps. You know, my spidey senses were tingling, but unfortunately I had about 60 lb of groceries on the back of my bike so I didn't feel equal to investigating. I don't even think I could give a description.

Default Purse snatching/fondling--2200 block of Pemberton

From the South Philly Review:

"A woman was fondled and robbed last Thursday on the 2200 block of Pemberton Street by a man who rode up to her on a bicycle.
The victim was walking at 5:15 a.m. when the offender tried to strike up a conversation, according to a bulletin issued by the Special Victims Unit. Getting off his bike, he fondled and pushed her against a door then snatched her purse, which contained an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
The perpetrator was described as black with a dark complexion, round face and goatee. He was 20 to 25 years of age, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, 160 pounds and wearing black, baggy nylon pants, a black puffy winter jacket and a black ski cap.
He fled on a dark-colored BMX bicycle in an unknown direction.

To report information, call the Special Victims Unit at 685-3264."

Sounds like the mugging/assault/fondling that JillyS posted about.

May be a good time to suggest that if you are getting mugged, it's more effective to scream "Fire!!! Your house is on fire!!!" rather than "He stole my purse!".

People (being people) will generally be too timid to poke their head out for the latter... but people will be much more motivated to respond to possible house fire next door.

Default stolen bike

My sons bike was pinched around 22nd and Van Pelt last night (apparently not locked properly). A blue Raleigh with yellow grip tape. Appreciate a yell if anyone can help.

Yeah, I've heard that one before too, but I really wonder how many people who are being attacked will actually remember to say that.

Default Robbery Alert

From the 17th district:

Quote:
ROBBERY ALERT!
THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN ROBBERIES IN THE AREA

Make it Difficult to be a Robbery Victim

• Most robberies are committed in the late hours of night or early hours of the morning, when the sun is down.
• Reduce the risk of being robbed by making sure you take these simple precautions.

1. Pay attention to your surroundings: Do not walk past an area if you see a person or persons in that area acting suspIcious.

2. Walk in well lit areas: Try walking along the main streets that are well lit and have frequent traffic instead of small side streets and alley ways.

3. Try to travel in numbers: Offenders usually go after individuals walking alone so if possible walk with friends.

4. Keep personal property secure: Keep a firm hold on your pocketbooks and backpacks or other carrying bags, also keep valuables out of plain view i.e. (money, wallets, IPODS and cell phones). Offenders will target an individual if they see an item they want in plain view.

Remember never fight back with a robbery suspect always keep your safety first, try to remain calm and get a good physical description of the offender.
