Default another fire tonight

Dunno if the 'crime' thread is the place for this... BUT:

21st and Warton just had a house fire tonight, 3 news helicopters hovering overhead for the live sensational shot.

Now, that's just a few blocks south of Washington, but it's kind of our hood... I just want to know if anyone else things theres been an unusual amount of abandoned homes burning down around us... or am I just paranoid?

Well, arson is a crime, so if that's what you're suggesting then this is a good place for the comment. We've had several fires in our neighborhood this year, all involving either vacant housing or seriously substandard housing:

21xx Christian (substandard) -- resident caused fire trying to heat -- can't recall whether it was faulty wiring, space heater etc

7xx S 19th (substandard - fatal) -- smoking

1904 Carpenter (fatal) -- unattended pot on stove

9xx S 20th (substandard/abandoned) -- resident/squatter probably caused fire unintentionally

755 S 20th (vacant) -- fire caused in process of demolition, when workers used welding equip on oil tank that hadn't been emptied, or so I hear.

Default Liquor Store...Robbed Again

The liquor store at 24th & South was robbed again tonight at about 8:35 PM by an African American male armed with a shotgun. Along with robbing the store he also held up at least one person inside the liquor store. He ran out the door and headed on 25th to a waiting dark getaway SUV which sped off in the direction of filters square. This is like the third time this month the place has been held up, kind of crazy!

How does one hide a shotgun? What is it about the grocery store and liquor store that make them such easy targets?

There's a tutorial on YouTube on how to do it:

All joking aside, I've lived in the neighborhood for almost five years and this past year seems like the worst, granted as I get older I notice "quality of life" issues more and more such as crime, education, taxes, etc.

Ummm perhaps when the cashiers and workers are in on it, and don't care if someone comes strolling in with a shotgun? Ok, I'm only mildly joking, but it seems as though the management/employees at these stores don't care. They still won't upgrade security, and it may not be a problem for them, but it is for the residents!

I live on the other side of the neighborhood, so don't really go to these stores, but have to say that if I were a regular customer I would be less likely to frequent them if they were not willing to take the measures recommended by the police to create a safer environment.

We're certainly having second thoughts before we venture to either South Square or the State Store around closing time. Just tonight the other half was thinking about running up to South Square for something or other, realized it was almost closing time, and decided not to go. This is really disturbing.

You and the other half (and other shoppers) should make South Square aware of your concerns. I don't know about the state store, but the police have told South Square to upgrade their security cameras. The fact that they aren't willing to put out a couple hundred dollars to do so seems ridiculous.

I think it's high time to place a security officer at this location! This is a state-operated store. Put my tax dollars to work and protect me ( I frequent the store) and its employees.
