Did I see you at 16th and Catharine tonight around 6:45ish? I almost ran someone of your description over. You/she was walking with a friend, looked like you/she was returning from buying coffee or crack.

PS, I saw no Muslim/Freeway style beards, just a few ladies with coffee, or coffee cups full of crack.

NOW THAT'S OFF-TOPIC!!!

Tsk. No, I wasn't there. I was on a tour of a Civil War-era building.

speaking of baddies, which we were, right? I was at 16th and south on the way home last night, saw a woman that looked lost and asked if she was. she said no, but the two guys that were pacing the Tree Man garden had been following her (she stopped at the very well lit SW corner of 16th and South) . i walked with her to my house - they sorta followed but ducked into Kater at 16th (which was the site of an arrest a week ago - 8 cruisers, one guy.). these guys didn't look nice and since that block of 16th, east side, is SOOOOO dark, we couldn't even see them - black fellas, black coats was all I got (maybe some leather patch stitching somewhere).

we stopped at my house and picked up the Man to walk her back to her place at 16th and Cath. I didn't see the guys after they ducked into Kater, though.

With this unseasonably bizzaro warm weather, please be careful out there.

Thanks for the heads up.

Would it have been appropriate to call 911 to report that you were being followed by two men and which direction they went--especially because there have been recent muggings in the area? Since I got basically heckled by a 911 dispatcher for reporting someone pushing a shopping cart with items in it I wonder if I'm too quick to call the cops.

It was so good of you to help this woman out. I imagine she was pretty freaked out.

Hi, folks. In the interest of conserving bandwidth, I deleted that image-heavy lesson on how to insert images into posts -- being reasonably confident that HCM and Dr_G wouldn't mind.

i wondered the same - I guess I sorta went with the thought that a)we were taking care of her, b) they weren't following, and c) a cruiser went up 16th just as we passed our house.

Question: do I write to the streets dept to request more lighting on that block of 16th tween South and Bainbridge?

Also - the fact that they have begun foundation laying on 16th and kater (to the west side) is great. Its the east side of 16th that seems to beckon the hoodlums . and tree man garden doesn't help at night. (dunno if that's the right name but its what I call it)

I believe that Universal owns the "tree man" garden. They've been less than conscientious stewards of that property over the years and perhaps should be encouraged to clean it again.

jtrain, I think it's worth a call to the Streets Department to request more lighting. You may be bounced around to different departments and I'm sure they get these requests all the time, but it's worth advocating for. Maybe even send an email to Officer Gibson at CRO17th@aol.com explaining what you experienced last night and how more light would help. He seems to have "contacts" in the city departments.

We bought a few solar powered porch lights at Lowe's ($20 each) and plan to install them on some of the vacant properties on our block. If they work well if might be worth looking into ways to raise/obtain money to install them in poorly lit areas throughout the neighborhood.

There are Universal offices across the street from me. How well would I be received if I went over there and discussed the "Tree Man Garden" with them? Or should I just call? That little corner has the potential to be very cute, but the goal for now is clean and maintained.
