Probably need to include a pointer to nearby gas stations (none in our neighborhood).
I know of ??, Broad and Catharine (Fitzwater?) Hess's, Broad & Bainbridge Exxon?, 22nd and Walnut -- closest to Hertz 19th and Ludlow drop off point Merit (?), 30th and Grays Ferry I thought of this as I was biking to the train station to get to Nursing Home Land this morning...

One of the nearest recreational amenities for residents of our neighborhood is the Schuylkill River Trail, scheduled to reach South Street in 2009 and then to proceed south along the Schuylkill's east bank toward Grays Ferry and Bartram's Gardens.
The closest access for us is the contested at-grade access across the CSX tracks at Locust Street. CSX has used those tracks for years (and I am reliably informed that there are operational reasons it should continue to do so). The question of allowing safe access for the hordes of pedestrians, joggers, skaters, and cyclists who cross the tracks is a contentious one. Here is a link to an advocacy group's website, posted on another thread by jakdracula: http://www.freetheriverpark.org/ Access to the park is also possible via a staircase from Walnut Street and from a ramp at Chestnut Street. As a personal aside, I will admit that I use the Locust Street entrance for convenience as a cyclist; that I would not object to going another two blocks for access should CSX decide to fence it; and that it has become so crowded since it opened that I use it far less often than I did when it was a muddy rutted track through the weeds and trash.

I didn't name the group!
Here's the nascent website for the Town Watch group that's centered, if I recall correctly, on an area roughly 21st-23rd and Webster to St. Albans. Ljlong posted this in meeting announcements, which is hardly where one is likely to go looking for resources. [begin copied posting] From http://www.sosotownwatch.org/index.html "Want to Keep Your Neighborhood Safe? JOIN TOWN WATCH! We are determined to keep Philly safe for our families and for ourselves, BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! Meet your neighbors, get some exercise, and serve your community! We patrol in the evenings south of South St and east of Grays Ferry Ave." For contact info, email, online form to volunteer and more go to: http://www.sosotownwatch.org/index.html Townwatch is patrolling right now and making your neighborhood safer. It's fun and a good walking working. Meet your neighbors and make a difference. Your dog will love it.

AHB posted this over on southwest_center_city, and I think it merits a mention here, although it's a citywide thing posted in another forum:
http://www.mynorthwood.net/ The activists in this community are posting a citywide list of upcoming zoning hearings. Since SOSNA is less than stellar about getting the word out about its own metings in a timely and comprehensive fashion, it may be useful for some of our own neighborhood activists to keep a sharp eye on this.
