Default Gunshots this evening (2/23/06)

I was walking my dogs around 6:30 on 18th between fitzwater and bainbridge when I heard ~10 shots fired. I thought the they were coming from 1-2 blocks east of where I was. I called 911 and the police dropped by a few minutes later...they had received a couple other calls further west and were unsure of the locatin of the shooting.

If anyone has any information they can share...please do.

What? AGAIN? I probably passed you up by car since I drive back from the 'burbs that way around that time but I didn't hear anything. The whole neighborhood around Fitler Square seems to be a hotspot lately.

I counted sixteen sounds and thought it was coming from 19th and Carpenter or somewhere east of there. It sounded as though it was coming from the south, and I was walking home on Christian, past the St. Charles Rink. When the sound is muffled I'm never sure whether it's gunfire or construction noise.

I too was walking the dog at that time, just leaving the 1900 block of Kater, and heard the shots. Actually I wasn't sure if they were gunshots or firecrackers. They seemed to be coming a ways east-south-east from where I was.

I hate to sound naive, but is it possible it was construction noise? The guys working at 16th and Christian just stopped a little while ago. They were using nail guns all evening and at times I had to remind myself the noise I was hearing was from their work. My husband and I were also out with the dog at that time and didn't hear anything that we assumed was anything but construction noise. We also have on occasion found empty packs of caps on the sidewalk...

Default Likely gunshots, IMO

At 6:30 pm, it's dark. Most construction workers get in at the crack of dawn and leave before traffic gets heavy.

Even the ones who have to stay late can't work with heavy equipment after twilight.

If the natural light is dwindling, assume it is gunshots and please call 911.

It's ok to call 911 and be wrong, IMO. Nail guns sound regular, gunshots sound rapid. One is Bap. Bap. Bap.

The other is bapbapbap. Bapapapapapap.

Plus, the location.

Just so you're all aware, I thought I'd post a comment I made earlier this month in the UC forum. Not saying what you heard weren't gunshots, but you might want to be aware:

So if you think you hear gunfire, it's possible it's just these clowns (or others like them).

Of course, exercise caution if you do hear what sounds like gunfire, just in case it actually is!

There was A LOT of construction activity at 16th and Christian until 9:00 last night, and they were using nail guns and making a ton of noise to the point where we talked about calling the police or L&I. We were out in the area everyone seems to be describing the sound coming from at the same time, and there was a lot of noise, but everything we heard seemed to be construction.

If there were 10-16 shots I assume someone found or will find shells, otherwise I'll assume it was construction or firecrackers, but I agree, it's better to call 911 if you think it might have been gun shots.

What I heard was so very regular (all "shots" perfectly evenly spaced) that I was reluctant to call 911, especially as I had walked home past a number of construction sites all lighted up inside with guys working on the interiors. I was reasonably convinced that if it had been gunfire some folks closer to the source would have been able to tell what it was and would have made the call to 911.
