(cross posted from Center City forum - I would also post this in the thread in South West Center City forum on the South Street Bridge but I can't seem to find that thread)
FYI - there is a meeting on the design of the South Street Bridge to be held at the Philadelphia School on May 23rd @ 7pm. Hopefully people can make it out to voice the concerns we have as a community with the present design. For example, the designers have redesigned the "death ramps" to permit large trucks and buses to have an easier time making the turn from the ramps to South Street. To create more space for the wider turns large vehicles make, the designers have widened the intersection at the top of the ramp and moved the curb cuts down the ramps. Not only will this change make it tougher for pedestrians and bicyclists to use the bridge, this change is potentially disastrous for disabled pedestrians who will have a much more difficult time negotiating the intersection. Not to mention, does it even make sense for large trucks to be using South Street bridge for access to University City/SW Center City??? Not only does it make absolutely no sense to encourage commercial traffic in residential neighborhoods, the idea of having semis trying to merge on to the expressway while using the death ramps strikes me as patently dangerous.

From Horace L. Gibson, community relations officer, a letter to block representatives:
"Our next meeting will be held on June 12, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. at the 17th District, 20th & Federal Street. We are heading towards an organized group to place our concerns at the feet of city government or where ever it may do the best good. There is power in numbers. Please place this date on your calendars." Officer Gibson may be reached at 215-685-1747. Dr. Gingivitis and several other Phillyblog regulars attend many of these meetings; I'm sure that others will be welcome.

Bump. There is a zoning committee meeting tomorrow, June 7, to consider possible changes to the way SOSNA conducts its zoning activities. Please note change of venue from the Marian Anderson Rec Center to the St. Anthony Senior Center, 2309 Carpenter Street.
This meeting is a committee meeting and as such is open to the public. It does not count toward voter eligibility. I have some thoughts about this meeting, which I will post on a separate thread. Quote:
