Default Gray's Ferry Ave. Near PECO/Trigen Facility

Hi, I'm new to PhillyBlog. I'm looking at houses between Christian and Washington between 18th & 26th. Anyone have thoughts on health concerns as a result of living close to the PECO/Trigen facility?

Thanks,
Janine

We're just across the Ave. on 25th Street where we've been for over 15 years now. I only glow leaving Grace!

But seriously, I've heard some of the Christian Street residents talk about a white powder that ate the clear coat off of their cars, but that might have been before they installed the scrubbers in the smoke (steam) stacks. I think the worst bit of the Trigen plant is the noise it sometimes makes... generally in the middle of the night. Bang, bang... bang, bang, bang, bang. I thought it was automatic weapons fire the first time I heard it!

Yeah, I love the area and the thought of being so close to Grace is very enticing! I'm a first time home-buyer so I'm just a little nervous about anything and everything. But also very excited. And I don't mind a little extra glow :-D

Default Reason to believe that cleaner standards in future are inevitable, also

I think the more people who are educated enough to blog that question, the more Trigen will have to continue to clean up the plant.

Kerry and Gore praised Trigen for its multiple use of fuel and relatively clean (for a petroleum facility as compared to coal) output in days past.

Pressure on state compliance with Clean Air Act and in not allowing the feds to weaken it is critical. But we are going in that direction even now.

There is every reason to believe that the cleaning technologies under development will become industry standard in the near future, such as the amazing use of algae as cheap, efficient scrubber. Yes, it is true that this technology is cheaper than the hated scrubbers.

An MIT Ph.D. has formed a company that is marketing the technology to utilties right now, and if we do something like sign Kyoto, then this stuff will really be put into place fast.

http://www.greenfuelonline.com/index.htm

I hear that the clear tubes that the exhaust is channeled into are bright chartreuse green from the algae, which really appeals to me as a gardener.

I can just see riding my bike on the new Schuylkill River bike path to Bartram's Garden, past a farm of these nitrogen and carbon reclaiming mini-wonders.

I think the day is just around the corner when Trigen will set something like this up, with some help and guidance from the community.

What do you think?

I've been living in the 2000 block of Christian Street for almost ten years and don't seem to be dead yet.

I ended up buying a place on 2600 block of Catharine. Last time I was in the house I noticed that when I look out the 2nd floor master bedroom (looking north over Naval Square wall and JFK Vo-Tech) I can see the smokestack from the plant in West Philly (Presbyterian Hospital?). Not a bad deal, eh? A view to a smokestack from both ends of the house Actually, the nice part about my block is I really can't see the Peco station till I walk down to the end of the block.

Can't wait till spring to see the Naval Square trees in bloom!

Good luck in your new home. I lived on 2600 catherine and I had an aunt on that block also. My Grandmother lived around the corner on Webster until her death. We're three generations of pocket dwellers since the 30's. I also rehabed a house on your block. I forget the address but it has a tanish painted brick front. it on the south side towards Schuckill Ave about 4 houses up from the new construction. Lots of great memories of that area. Enjoy!!!
