Default Question re:12th and Moyamensing area

On Thursday I looked at an apt. around 12th and Moyamensing, and I'm seriously considering it. I did a small walk around the neighborhood. I'm trying to find out some more info though:

What restaurants, bars, other type nightlife spots are around there?
How close would I be to the Italian Market? How about Chickie and Pete's? I'm familiar with those spots - what else would you recommend?
What about crime rates? The neighborhood seemed stable and safe during my brief daytime walk but I'm still curious.
Where are there supermarkets? Are there corner delis/bodegas that might fit the bill in between supermarket runs?

Most important factor though, is that I will be getting rid of my car once I move. The Broad St. Subway is an obvious choice, but are there crosstown buses or north/south buses that I could hop on to get places other than Broad St.?

Other facts: I'm a lifelong Philadelphian, so I'm moderately familiar with the city, but not that familiar with South Philly. Also, I'm planning on joining Philly Carshare.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I will answer your questions in order.

There are two really good restaurants on Broad Street. Not 3 minutes from your house.

Cholly Bear's bar is right around the corner.

Walk down to Passyunk and then straight down that to the Market. About a 25 minute walk.

Chickie's is about a 15 minute walk south down Broad.

If you walk up Moyamensing to 16th you will run into Pollock's Place. Good bar with eclectic patrons and a great shuffleboard table.

Random crime can happen anywhere. Where you are, no criminal with an ounce of brain cells in his head would target. The penalty for him getting caught is far too great to risk. It is an exceptionally safe neighborhood.

The closest supermarkets are at 3rd and Oregon and 18th and Oregon. I would go to the Acme at 18th. Easier traffic and a cleaner store with way more selection.

You have an absolutely FANTASTIC deli on Iseminger Street, right off Moyamensing. Tell Frank, Harry says hello from Utah. Pastery and bread store on Iseminger and Oregon.

East Side steaks on Juniper and Oregon has a good cheesteak. I like their chicken steak better.

The 23 bus runs up 11th and 12th street to CC.

You are moving into a very strong, close knit, clean, safe neighborhood. The neighbors take care of their own and if anyone tries anything dumb(crime) they are taken care of. I lived on 2600 Juniper for the 2 years prior to coming here for school. You may get some weekend noise from all the teenagers who hang around Jenks schoolyard. Besides that you have chosen an absolutely wonderful location.

Enjoy it.
