Someone wrote and we comment on .......
South Street Headhouse District and Family Values ...... Hey guys! We are all on the same side here. Everyone wants better FAMILY VALUES. The only problem being how to go about it. Yes, the posts may be exasperating at times, but how else can we get new ideas about how to improve our community? This is a forum, a discussion board ....... Joely I have a running argument with my buddy Vinnie who moved over to Moorestown, NJ. He and Delores moved there supposedly, for family values. "Vinnie, what are you talking about? Do you realize how many sandwich shops you guys got over there ....? There is Blimpie's, there is Subway ....." "Oh I suppose that the South Street area is filled with family values ....." "Well yes it is." I explained. "Why not come over next Saturday and we can stroll South Street and I can show you?" Well Vinnie and Delores were almost an hour late. I was worried. But when my doorbell rang there they were. "What happened?" "Oh jeez I do not know. There are hundreds and hundreds of cops all around and we could not drive into the perimeter. One cop said there is a lovely picnic scheduled ..... something about some fraternity ...." MY GOD.... Greek picnic! But I reminded Vinnie, at least we are closing down all those nasty sandwich shops as fast as we can. "What about the sleaze going on during Mardi Gras? What about the residents practically being held captive within their homes? What about crime, murder and mayhem?" "WE are fixing it, beginning with the mayhem. Do you realize how tossing sandwich wrappers on the ground affects a neighborhood? That place that is now Blockbuster ....... ok so they found a body lying behind a sofa early one morning. It happens you know ....." "Ahem, so why not limit the number of bars or eliminate them entirely? You know Moorestown is a dry town." "Well, ummmm, ummmmm, the wrappers is where we start ....... and then in perhaps forty or fifty years then its time to move up trash cans ......." Seriously, I was at a loss for words ... Can any PhillyBloggers help me out here? H-e-l-p-p-p-p-pp-p-p-ppppp-p-pp-p-! More later ........ Joely Quote:

I'm not sure exactly what you and your Jersey friend are talking about when you say "family values." Are you talking George Bushian "family values," complete with an Army recruiting station for the high school kids, or having a G-rated South Street with maybe a Disney store, where kids can buy corporate-logo merchandise with busty cartoon characters, or a Warner Bros. store? Or does it simply mean less litter and less trashy language, which I think most of us can support?
Look, this is the city. It's supposed to be different from the suburbs. I reckon that a lot of people who make trouble here at Mardi Gras, or at Eagles games, come in from New Jersey and other suburbs to do so. Sure, Philadadelphia could and should do more to clean up, in many ways. But don't feel you need to defend it to someone who's suggesting to you that New Jersey is somehow superior. Those highways on the other side of the Ben Franklin Bridge aren't exactly scenic wonders. There are even some bars and strip clubs there. And I doubt that New Jersey is unfamiliar with serious crime. I know some very nice people from New Jersey. I also notice that some of the more careless and discourteous drivers on Philadelphia streets have New Jersey plates. You're worried about what this guy thinks about South Street? Helloooooo Uncle Cranky! Good to hear from you although I am always worried that I am going to get chastised for (a) starting a new thread from an old thread, or (b) continuing an old thread and changing or hijacking the thread with my schtick.
ONE QUESTION: Which O-Sandwhich do you mean? PS- I happen to like David Auspitz lots. Joely Quote:
Wich (sic) one would you prefer.? Quote:

Yo QV,
I and my twenty friends want to control the city, or at least the South Street Headhouse District. We have decided that each kid must walk up and down South Street wearing Mouseeketeer mouse ears. Do you know how hard it is to start trouble when everybody is laughing at you? Joely In cased you missed it, the entire thread is a spoof against all the doo-gooders we got running around here. I do mean doo-gooders ....... Quote:

BTW, thanks for correcting my misspelling of your favorite topic (sandwhiches). I will make every effort to re-word your future posts so they are human readable...NOT! -UC |

Well, since you mentioned it, it is kind of hard to follow the discussion, and tell spoof from silliness, when you start a new thread from an old one that not everyone was following.
I don't even know what an O-sandwich shop is. |

Uncle Cranky and I never thought you'd ask!
O-Sandwich is a delicious sandwich served on a baguette that is freshly baked on premesis. Its a crisp, clean, friendly shop where you do not have to worry about what shirt to wear. By this I mean you do not have to worry about the grease stains dripping from your sandwich down onto your shirt as you do with the places closeby. Its located just between Geno's at 9th and Passyunk and La Lupe at 9th St. If you go late at night after 9pm say, you may miss them. You can tell because they have already schlepped their heavy tables inside. La Lupe, same heavy tables, and Geno's same heavy tables remain outside, well, ... because they are special. O-Sandwich has been severely criticized for not serving on china and not using washable cupware. That's the nature of the sandwich business. That is why they are located within a SANDWICH ZONE. By the way, South Phillers, is the O-Sandwich place open yet? Last I heard they were still negotiating about the zoning. It seems that George Perrier wanted to open La Brassiere Sandwhich, but Uncle Cranky objects to using his unique spelling of the word. Anybody try Fat Dappie's SANDWHICHES yet? Joely Quote:

O' is still not open.
And you still have not made it clear why you care so much? What is your stake in O'? No normal person could care so much about the injustices of a single sandwhich shop without having some financial interest in it. Please disclose why you can't stop mentioning O'? Also, is this a chain or this a single new store? Just wondering, since this location hasn't opened yet, how can you attest to how good and tasty the sandwhiches are if it is not opened yet? Has anyone confirmed that Fat Dappies is actually Dappies and not Daddies? I rode by it today and it's d's or p' are in the shape of a fat daddy. So I would think it is fat Daddy's? -UC |

Uncle Cranky,
How many times must I tell you to stop creeping back into your old ways? Its SANDWICH not SANDWHICH! In case anyone cares, I am merely trying to create a BUZZ for any new place where they have the fortitude and the vision to help make our turf a wonderful place. It was a crappy pushcart storage area and now its a wonderful sandwich spot! By me that is simply grand. Yeah Geno's and Pat's already have their own following ...... but why not LIFT UP other people too! This is not a zero-sum gain, this Philadelphia thing. Anyone who comes to my city and wants to improve it, with another sandwich shop, whatever, I am firmly behind them. I have no financial interest or other interest in any of them. Of course one cannot buy passion and dedication ...... so it stands out! And sadly in today's world, it seems weird. I passed by O-Sandwich one time when they had prepared something for themselves, probably testing the ovens, and from the looks of the sandwich and the looks of the people, I can just tell it will be simply great. EDITING and adding this: For example, Famous Dave's may be great or it may be crappy. They can survive no matter what. If its crappy they simply take out some more full page ads and make up for the crappiness. I prefer for folks (in a city) to have choices. Therefore I will look into every possible avenue to help out the little guy ...become even better! I wish we have fifty more people doing the same. It could spell the difference for many small businesses. If someone sees O-Sandwich right here 20-30 times, the name may stick. Joel Quote:
