Default Roof Top Deck Architect

Can anyone recommend an architect for a roof top deck?

I'd imagine that it's more likely you'd want a structural engineer, no?

We're using them on a house we're rehabbing right now. He's a great guy to work with.Don't know what price range you're looking at, but he's pretty flexible.

Tell him Josh Weber sent you

Have you talked to your neighborhood association? I love roof decks, but I see a lot of opposition to even the most pretty roof decks, even when the opposition fails. If you can get community approval at a pre-zoning board meeting with the zoning community adjunct group, you will have no problem.

I most definitely will. But I figure we'll see if what I have in mind is structurally possible and affordable first.

I'm wondering what objection someone could have to a neighbor having a rooftop deck.

if you saw my next door neighbor's deck you'd understand. It looks like a small wooden wrestling ring. Four posts in the corners connected by three braided steel cables. Did I mention that the roof is pitched at about 30deg and the deck was only angled up about 15deg. I have no idea how they got it approved (obviously they didn't get permits).

I too am in the process of acheiving a roof top deck in S.Philly.I finally spoke to a contractor , who may or may not be able to do it. He's contacting an architect first, you need to have the plans to take to the zoning board. It is my understanding that you may need a letter form your civic association approving it before the zoning board will look at your plans.I don't know of any neighborhood association, or civic assoc. in my neighborhood. I'm over near the Melrose.(how do you find that out?) I have also heard that the people who oppose them are usually people who already have decks and don't want you to obstruct their view.It appears to be a long process and I will be happy if I can sit on it next spring!

Joey0,

My dad is both a registered architect and a professional engineer. He is semi-retired, but I will talk to him to see if he might be interested in doing some plans for you. If he is I will PM you with his info, however, I probably won't get to this til after Jul. 14th.
