Trash is terrible around Broad and Passyunk because Broad and Snyder is a major intersection. Passyunk is a wind tunnel and the trash levitates there. Often you can find Wes Bentley with a video recorder sitting there opining.

Essentially, your problem is noise. You have two hospitals, 24 hour thrift stores(milk, bathroom products, etc.) great restaurants, good bars, fast food, SEPTA, a nice summer walk to South Street, close to a Mummer's drill site on New Year's Day, and short skirted Goretti girls. If you can live with noise it is a slam dunk. Go for it.

- A newly and beautifully rehabbed building at Passyunk and Mifflin that now houses Filitalia, an Italian language and culture center.

- Demolition about to begin on a building south of there where, I understand, a new cafe restaurant is going to be built.

- A relatively new and very upscale Italian restaurant/wine bar, Paradiso's, where business seems to be booming.

- A fountain at Passyunk and Tasker, which I always enjoy seeing when I walk by, especially since there's also mellow music from the '40s and '50s playing there.

- Frequent neighborhood festivities happening along Passyunk sponsored by Citizens Alliance for Better Neighborhoods. Tomorrow, for instance, they're going to have some kind of a spring festival featuring Mummers performances and sidewalk sales.

Yes, lots of good stuff is happening here.

In the minus column, at least from my own personal perspective, trash is indeed a problem around these parts. Don't ask me why, but there seems to be an awful lot of folks around here who don't mind living with trash piled up on the sidewalks, streets, and gutters in front of their homes. I don't know if it's just a part of South Philly culture or what, but I really hate it. I pick up trash in front of my home and my neighbors' properties on a daily basis, and it doesn't get better.

And, yes, it's noisy, but it's the city and there's lots of life around us. I think the sound of lots and lots of kids frolicking, while sometimes disruptive, is a good sign.

Heretofore, I've always lived in suburbia and, all things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia!

Excellent post.

What is the passyunk spur of the subway I heard you talking about? Atleast I thought it was you. BTW, I was living on LOmbard that year and my roomate and I walked down south street that night about an hour or so before all the stuff started. I can't explain it, I didn;t witness anything going on, but we both got to about 6th st and turned back because you could feel something was brewing.

someone posted it a good while back. way back in the city's heady days they had proposed adding a spur to the BSL that went from BSL down west passyunk to the schuylkill.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for so many great replies. I live on 13th in Center City right now, and so I'm fine with normal noise levels and such, but was wondering if that area was particularly bad. One thing that I was also wondering is how people that live in that area feel about depending on the subway to get into the city - is it suitably reliable and safe? Living in Center City, I've never felt unsafe walking around at night, largely due to the number of people out and about. I also rather enjoy the vitality of the area - lots of restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance. In fact, I don't bother with a car because I can walk everywhere, and occasionally take the subway or bus when I am going far. Living further south would force me to rely more on the subway system, but I'd still like to enjoy the neighborhood I live in. Are there any comments people can make about the walkability of the area in terms of doing weekly shopping, etc?
