These things have happened as long as there have been cars in South Philly. I got nailed last year, some jerk banged into the back side and smashed my tail light in the bargain.

I cringe when someone tells me that buying a new car in SP isn't wise. What, folks who want something nice are supposed to forgo such things because others can't drive? Tell me that this is only a South Philly problem, and that it doesn't happen elsewhere.

I have a $250 deductible, because of all the body damage from living in the city. at some point, I stopped fixing the body damages, as long as the car was safe, I didn't care anymore. I drove around for 2 years with crushed drivers side door.

I sold that car and got a new one in march, so far, I had one guy scrape my bumper when trying to park behind me. I ran outside and confronted him. he was lucky that it could be buffed out. but at some point, this car will look just as beat as the old one.

It's the taxi drivers you have to watch out for. They will run you off the road, and take your mirrors off while you are parked.

I got nailed on a hit and run a few months back by a drunken school bus driver, drug my car down the street, wrecked it, then left it.

Caught him (well we got the company number thanks to a helpful witness I knew) but still months later I'm fighting with thier insurance company who is looking to stiff me, I guess they figure the additional lawyer costs/etc. won't be worth it (probably won't unfortunately). Btw can I add Harleysville insurance are a bunch of total scumbags!

Btw anyone in South Philly should be able to own whatever car they like, sure higher theft chances maybe but should we all have wrecks just in case, where would that end, why paint the front of the house, have a nice jacket, etc.

There's a paranoid mindset that comes with owning a new car. You fret and worry about it constantly, until it's a few years old and has some dings in it.

If you buying something used, you save yourself a bunch of money, and you can skip the painful process of having a new car turned into an old car.

And then there's the logic of making the most expensive purchase most people make and then leaving it sitting on the street...

First off the worse investment you'll ever make is a car!!! Once you get that idea in your mind the rest is easy. A late model used car won't save you much money. You may save more if you buy a hummer or a big SUV right now, but a Honda or Toyota with a warranty might be MORE then a new car or close. Now if your talking a 92 yugo yeah, you'll save money but repairs will be high every month and you may miss a few days of work.
