My wife and I are looking at moving into South Philly and have been researching neighborhoods. We have found the comments on this site helpful, though placing them in geographic context can be a dizzying task. This can be particularly difficult considering the block by block nature of much of Philly. To help I threw together this map of the neighborhoods that I have learned of so far. The map is done in google and is open for public edits. feel free to put in your own neighborhood or comments on specific trouble spots, favorite spots, etc.

Holy crap. Do you have cameras in my house?
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid= 111490730333605011258.00044ef7c0ccc7333872d I just made this one last week . I gave up though - trying to reconcile the VERY different neighborhood boundaries as defined by wikipedia, the Philly planning board and Penn Library was basically impossible. I'm still trying to find a good way to reconcile them without 'fudging' with my own averaged boundaries. Here are the data sources I used:Wikipedia Phillyplan.com (PDF) uPenn Library Glad to have another Geek in South Philly! |

Thanks J. I ran into fuzzy boundaries too. Thats why I decided to go the Wiki route and let the neighborhood residents tell me what they think they're own boundaries are. Also, I was hoping that people might put in points that relate to some of the comments they have made about "such and such block is bad, but the next block over is good" You should make your map public and post it, or stick those neighborhoods I'm missing on my map so we can consolidate the effort. I am already learning new things like there is a dog park in Passyunk Square. I thought the nearest one was Mario Lanza.

This is a great idea.
Your boundaries for Newbold, however, are incorrect. Broad Street west to 18th. Tasker south to Wolf. Your region illustrates only the territory covered by the Newbold Neighbors Association, which falls within the Newbold region. I did not see how to adjust these boundaries. Please make the necessary adjustments. Thanks! |

Using the maps from the Philadelphia Planning webpage, I made this:
http://www.starstuff.net/misc/philadelphia/ It should have everything you need. It's accurate. |

Found another description on a different thread:
http://www.phillyblog.com/philly/gen...hood-maps.html "Southwark Eastern Neighborhood Enterprises" Actually, this is apparently a popular topic. I found another thread about this from 2005. Same answer as above. I guess I should have searched a little more. |
