This is not exactly a request for "pleasure," just for safety. To get personal, I am six months pregnant and my three-year-old and I were nearly run over today by a speeding minivan. This is typical of what is happening. People's lives are more important than the speedy flow of traffic on a tiny street. Anyway, I'm not interested in debating the morality of the question. Just looking for ideas.
I was hoping that we could place a couple of planters or metal poles at the end. That's it, and nobody loses a parking space. There would not seem to be a disruption of traffic flow because the street ends there anyway. |

The thing is, they shouldn't be flying down any street in the city, especially the small streets. Yes, the bigger streets are meant to absorb more of the traffic, thats why they are considered "main streets". But even if not, a small street is gonna probably have more kids or people in general playing, and people should acknowledge that. You know how many people my parents and brother have cursed out for FLYING down the side street they live in. I agree that the main streets shouldn't have to deal with it either, but being in the city, kids will flock to the side streets more, and that being said, drivers need to take notice of this.

One definite solution would be the addition of a chicane, although I doubt the neighbors would be willing to pay the price. The streets department supports this; it essentially entails switching the parking from one side to the other halfway down the block, forcing drivers to slalom, which reduces their speed. The price, of course, is a few lost parking spots. Another solution would be the purchase of an inexpensive old truck (or even car, or maybe even your present car, if you wouldn't mind it getting sideswiped) which you could conveniently park sticking out enough to cause drivers to crawl by it. One neat trick is to park the vehicle so that its (hopefully large) bumper is sticking out into traffic, so that your vehicle sustains minimal damage as it titanics the speeders; that is, park it somewhat crooked.

The last place you want to live is on a dead end street. They become sespools of crime. Just look up Peter St. for an example.
The cops can't sneak up on people. All you need is 2-3 bad houses and the street is done. |

I understand your gripe, but you have to look at the bigger picture also.

We all learned the correct way to drive and took a driving test to demonstrate that we could do it correctly. So what happened, why do people ignore the basic rules? By the way, we have no way of actually ticketing people for speeding on streets as short as these. The Vascar or Tracker Units need a longer distance to effectively calculate the speed.
