Default Tips for dealing with a neighbor who lets their dog do his "thing" in the backyard?

I'm about to move into a new place and the only thing i'm nervous about is the amount of dog "business" in the backyard.

when we first looked at the place, there was 1 pile, but now its like a roving sea of feces

i don't even want to think of what its going to smell like in the heat of the summer

i plan on putting up a taller fence so i at least don't have to look at it

has anyone else had this problem?
how do you rationally approach someone to tell them that they're foul?

A fence won't help. You can bet your bottom dollar you will have flies until November. That is a health hazard.

well they may just be lazy - and dont realize that it bothers their neighbors. maybe you can write a nice note?

i dont know. good luck. i would try to talk to them first before citing them for animal abuse. that would really start things off on the wrong foot.

Yeah, some people are just dense. I have a dog and he does his business in the backyard, but we always clean it up immediately or shortly afterward.
If neighbors can smell it, the dog owners can smell it even more, I can never understand how some dog owners are totally oblivious. It's like when a dog is constantly barking and you mention it to the owners, and they say something like " I didn't hear it" or "I didn't realize it was MY dog barking" WTF?!

I had this problem. The neighbors were decent, civil people but the guy bought the dog just to spite the wife, who is a bitch. I told him that he "didn't seem like the kind of person who would live like that." He would clean it up, but sometimes have his sons do and they wouldn't do a real good job of it. They moved during the next summer, so the problem ended. Good luck.

Default Poop!

Just write them a note, trust me its fine. I was on the receiving end of that note once and aside from being a little embarassed I never took it to heart. I just explained the next itme I saw them that I was out of town for a month and the house sitter didn't pick it up. This of course was a total lie becasue I was home and just too busy/lazy to do it. But now my neighbors and I are good friends (several years later) and I had to tell them to pick up there dog's poop on my roof!

If they do get mad at you or don't like you because you left a note then F them. It's not like you need any new friend, Right? Oh, But make sure they speak whatever language you write the note in... that also gets tricky...lots of assumptions there.

I would assess the neighbor first to see how crazy, trashy, tough they are, etc. There's always the chance that no action will be taken on the problem.

Yeah, I let my dog go out back all the time, but I get it up either right after she goes, or within a few hours...sometimes it's a little too...umm, gooey to pick up right away. But now it is getting warmer, and I notice the increase in flies every day, so I hose the yard down once a week, but every day after I clean the poo, I at least throw a pitcher of hot water on the ground to try and help get rid of some of the residue. So I'd deffinatly try to mention to them that it's causing a lot of flies to hang out in your yard... maybe they left it build up because no one was living next door until you bought the place, still not right for the dog, but it's possible.
