Actually, technically part of Queen Village is still named Southwark due to a federal preservation initiative that was contrived to prevent billboards from being placed in QV...just thought I'd add that to confuse the issue a little further.
§14-2008. Southwark National Historic District. [430] (2) Definitions. In this Section the following definitions apply: (a) Southwark National Historic District. Beginning at the southwest corner of Front and Lombard streets and continuing south along the west side of Front street to Catherine street; thence east on Catherine to the rear property lines of the houses on the east side of Front street (from Catherine to Queen), thence south along these property lines to the rear property lines of the houses on the north side of Queen street; thence extending along these lines east to Delaware avenue; thence south along Delaware avenue to Washington avenue; thence west along Washington avenue to the Northwest corner of 5th street and Washington avenue; thence north along the west side of 5th street (including all those buildings located on the west side of 5th street) to the southwest corner of 5th and Lombard; thence east along the south of Lombard street (including all those buildings or the south side of Lombard street) to the northwest corner of Front and Lombard streets, the place of beginning, being that area which is designated as an historical area on the National Register of Historic Places on the 19th of May, 1972.

This thread is funny.
I guess when you pay hundreds of thousands more for a home than the next block over then it becomes important to you that you are recognized as a person who lives on a block or "square" with a name that means your house is worth hundreds of thousands more than the next block over. I mean, that is what you're paying for, isn't it? ![]() Last edited by Peanut206 : 05-15-2008 at 09:08 PM. |

Coming from someone that lives just a couple blocks south of South, I usually say Center City just because all of my errands, nightlife, walks etc happen within my immediate few block area or north of South just because the walkability is much nicer rather than crossing a huge four lane street like Washington with more traffic and less needs on the immediate other side.
Washington is such a dividing line that when we head south of Wash, it's by car and pretty rarely. Tonight we went to the Cantina Caballitos (which by the way we really love and it has the best margaritas in the city) so its not like we never go into the heart of South Philly but just proximity wise, we seem to always head north. I really don't think it's a snob thing as much as proximity. It also depends on what types of places you like to frequent. When you live a few blocks south of South Street, it's just easier - especially when you're walking to always be in CC rather than heading far into South Philly so you just associate yourself with CC more. Maybe some don't want to be called South Philly, but Washington just makes sense as the dividing line because it's such a big obvious street whereas South is is much smaller and unnoticeable in comparison. By the way - Change is OK - it's OK to change the borders as cities grow. I actually find it funny how divided the city is with where South Philly begins. Coming from someone who isn't a Philly native I find the whole thing silly. Who cares? If I'm just a few blocks from the high rise buildings of CC and farther from what's in South Philly, I'm going to say that I live in CC for proximity wise only - not "neighborhood snob appeal." |

You care. Thats why you tell everyone you live in Center City. Get honest with yourself. Y.O.U. L.I.V.E. I.N. S.O.U.T.H. P.H.I.L.L.Y. N.E.A.R. T.H.E. P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. There I spelled it out for ya.

Sorry, you can call it SWCC all you want. The rest of the city calls it South Philly. |

Do you feel better now? I bet you do. I hope all the nice folks on Philly Blog who live at MLK and post here also see that you're calling the homes they purchased Projects. Nice. ![]() |

Well, they are projects! The low rise, low density mixed use, mixed tenant format makes these projects 1000000x times better than previous high rise format.
edit- Lat, when I lived on Bainbridge St I said that I lived in Bella Vista (obviously a part of SPhilly, right next to CC). I believe you are a 3 blocks below Bainbridge...so you are really stretching it with the CC talk I can't think of anyone I know who calls that area CC - natives, yups, noobs etc. It has nothing in common with CC.
