I just think its funny that people make a 6 page thread asking why QV/BV is so special...obviously its because people want to spend 6 pages talking about them!
The role is easily reversed; why are others so "adamant" about being so inclusionary with Bella Vista / Queen Village? South Philly calls it soufilly, center city is trying to proclaim it as center city, and the planning commission has already remapped them as lombard east/washington square west/and juniper strip. Guess what? I didn't own a home in the 70's when realtors renamed the area Queen Village. I wasn't here when Rizzo decided to move Hawthorne south of center city. And either way, I could really give a fud what people call an area I reside in at the moment. Soufillians are about to be in an equivalent identity crisis with retrofitted names being instilled such as passyunk square, whitman, east oregon, marconi plaza, central south philadelphia, St Elisabeth, and a slew of other names that the planning commission will soon use in an attempt to divide your neck of the woods. Think it won't happen? Look at how many sophomoric threads crop up that say "what do you call this area?". People are starved for kitchy names they can impress others with. Eventually, this conversation will quickly veer from QV/BV, and will be replaced with "why do those people in greenwich-lovely think they're so special?"-how that name came about I'll never know. On page 33 you can see how they are planning to split all y'all up: http://www.philaplanning.org/data/boundaries.pdf

Thank you for proving my point!!! Page 23 clearly shows that Bella Vista is part of South Philadelphia. So does page 33 for that matter. I always appreciate evidence to help support my adamant assertions. ;-) RC |

Philadelphia is a city of many, many neighborhoods, each of which resides in a larger "section" of the city. As detailed in the map on page 23 which you helpfully provided, these sections are known as South Philadelphia, Center City, North Philadelphia, etc. This map on page 23 also clearly shows that the northern boundary of South Philadelphia is South Street. Page 33 goes into further detail and shows all of the little neighborhoods which make up these larger sections. In this map the northern boundary of Queen Village is also South Street. Taking both maps together, the only conclusion that can be made is that you live in Queen Village, which is one of the neighborhoods that makes up South Philadelphia. Just as I live in Passyunk Square, which is also a part of South Philadelphia. Do you see my point? Your logic is comparable to somebody who might say.."I don't live in Center City, I live in Rittenhouse Square-- see it says it right here on this map" but everyone knows that Rittenhouse Square is a part of Center City. Do you really not understand this? |

When I moved to 21st and Christian some years ago I thought I was moving to South Philly. I was surprised to find it called all these other fancypants things -- SWCC, Graduate Hospital, etc.
When I started posting on Phillyblog, South Philadelphia was defined as "everything south of Washington." The neighborhoods east of me had their own forums. Where did this my neighborhood belong? I will cop to arguing with the Phillyblog folks that if QV/Bella Vista got their own breakout and my neighborhood was defined out of South Philadelphia, we should get our own forum. I'm too far east of Grays Ferry Avenue to be the Devil's Pocket. SWCC always struck me as inaccurate -- Center City ends at South Street. I personally prefer Northwest South Philly or the Thirtieth Ward but no one seems to want to go along with me.
