I disagree and co-sign with hubba1. Girard Estates is different then Point Breeze or Packer park, etc. That is why it's called a neighborhood but it is a still a part of South Philly. I think South Philly is and means different for those that are born and or raised here versus those who are just moving in. SP has our own culture and proud of it! Just recently SP just started naming these district names...before it used to be Where you live? South Philly... Oh really Where? 18th and Mckean or wherever.

I tend to agree with you on that one, people who have been here their whole lives have a harder time saying Newbold or Hawthorne... it's usually just south philly to them. (I am a lifer, well 24 of my 30 years, and I still just say South Philly most of the time, but will use the specific area name when asked.) If you are IN south Philly and someone asks where you live, that's when I use the neighborhood name or street name... when you are out of state or even Philly, and someone asks you where you live- they are gonna stare blankly when the answer is "Hawthorne" heh heh. And yeah, I was always told South st to the Navy Yard, River to River was South Philly.
