old city & society hill are not even remotely in south philly. look at a freaking map. large parts of swcc are also not in south philly -- fitler square, et al.

why do people in south philly think their neighborhood encompasses the entire city?? and more importantly, why do they care so much?

i get that you south philly natives feel QV & BV are part of SP, and at one time is was, but QV has a very different feel than the rest of SP.
It still is part of South Philly, but due to the changing in residents and housing, it just has a fancy name. It's in a south philly zip code. I live in BV for a while, before that lived in what I only knew as South Philly ( I think it's considered Passyunk square or Passyunk crossing now, not even sure). When people asked where I lived, I'd say- South Philly, and if they ask where at in South Philly, I'd say- Bella vista, near the Italian Market, and that worked fine.

Thanks Sean.

This neighborhood breakdown has a proven to be best for the Phillyblog readers. As demand grows, we add new forums. North Philly and NJ Shore are the latest.

I always been told anything south of Market street (dividing line) was and East of Greys Ferry Bridge was South Philly.

I think a better question to ask would be: why is it that everyone who lives south of Washington has to share one forum, while small areas like Bella Vista get their own?

I disagree and co-sign with hubba1. Girard Estates is different then Point Breeze or Packer park, etc. That is why it's called a neighborhood but it is a still a part of South Philly. I think South Philly is and means different for those that are born and or raised here versus those who are just moving in. SP has our own culture and proud of it! Just recently SP just started naming these district names...before it used to be Where you live? South Philly... Oh really Where? 18th and Mckean or wherever.

I tend to agree with you on that one, people who have been here their whole lives have a harder time saying Newbold or Hawthorne... it's usually just south philly to them. (I am a lifer, well 24 of my 30 years, and I still just say South Philly most of the time, but will use the specific area name when asked.) If you are IN south Philly and someone asks where you live, that's when I use the neighborhood name or street name... when you are out of state or even Philly, and someone asks you where you live- they are gonna stare blankly when the answer is "Hawthorne" heh heh.
And yeah, I was always told South st to the Navy Yard, River to River was South Philly.

CO-SIGN CO-SIGN CO-----SSIIGGNNN

LMAO at this one.

They were building this house or renovating it at 3rd and Reed or Wharton near Sacred Heart a little while ago. 500,000 for 3 floors, 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. WHATT!! sorry, I will keep my little 2 story 4 bedroom and 2 full baths. That is crazy.

Those houses between 4th and 5th and Wharton that look like the project houses at 3rd and Washington...3 bedrooms 1 bath. 500,000! Yes, for that little matchbox house.

ALL TO LIVE IN A PLACE WITH A FANCY NAME!!!
