Yep - it's Lower Moyamensing (aka LoMo). Broad to 8th, Snyder to Oregon.

Default we are all south philly....

however, within south philly "groups" were created not just to rename the neighborhoods but to revitalize them by joining forces with local neighbors and business'. Not saying to make one better then the other but as groups get created and many volunteers work hard to keep their neighborhood safe, clean and fun other non group areas hopefully will pick up on it and start groups so once again south philly as a whole can be safe, clean and fun!

The people that start these groups (your neighbors) pick boundaries because a small band of volunteers can only handle so much. As groups grow they can then "help" local areas not yet defined start up their own. And, there is ONE big group that meets of all the "groups" in the area.

As I've suggested before, everything from South to Washington should be known as "South of South St", or "SoSo" for short.

Yeah, i mean, what's with this Philadelphia stuff? You live in PENNSYLVANIA!

South Philly is a section of the city, it's a geographic designation, as is the Northeast or West or North or Southwest. No one lives in a "neighborhood" of 300,000 people. Pennsport or Girard Estate doesn't stop being in South Philly because you call it Pennsport or GE.

When you're talking to someone from Philadelphia and they tell you that they're from the northeast and you say, "oh yeah? My uncle is in Somerton." and the person you're talking to says "oh, i'm down in Castor Gardens." those places don't stop being in the Northeast just because you're trying to be more precise about your location.

You're from Pittsburgh?
Yup.
What part?
East Side.
Oh, i've been there before, where?
Squirrel Hill.
Oh yeah, nice place.

Thank you, that's what I've been saying- just because it's labeled, doesn't mean it's not still part of the area, South Philly is an area of Neighborhoods. You can say you live in Bella Vista, or Passyunk Square... but yes, you still live in South Philly! Your N.E Philly explanation is perfect, I've never met a person who lives in the N.E without also saying the neighborhood in the Northeast that they live. It's just an easy way to narrow down where you are in that particular area of the city. I know growing up in South Philly, people just used street corners, which I still do sometimes- Where ya live? 10th and Tasker. Oh cool, I'm at 15th and Mifflin. And that would be that. Either way is fine, use a name, use a street, whatever makes you feel better, everyone-let's stop stressing over this.

Listen people,

No matter how much everybody wants to label everything, a la San Francisco and New York, we Soufilly peeps are not about to be called "SoYo" or "SoSo" or "Wolfpack" or whatever. It's SOUFILLY, pronounced just like that. That other post from the guy describing neighborhoods in S. Philly as they do in Pittsburgh is dead on.

If you like South Philly enough to live here, PLEASE DON'T TRY TO CHANGE IT!!!!!!
