I think a lot of those were painted by professional sign painters ages ago. I grew up in West Philly, and I can only guess how long ago the numbers were painted on most houses. Probably in the 1910's or 1920's, based on the typefaces.

Yeah, last fall, two seedy-looking guys knocked on MY door *after* painting on my curb and asked for a "donation".
I don't need that, I have a number plaque on the front of my home. I didn't give them a dime, screw that.

Talking address painters

Same thing happened to me. A bang (not a knock) on the door, and there appears a dishevled guy stating he painted my address on the curb in white paint and asked for a donation. I told him "thanks alot" but I didn't ask for the service. Don't think he liked my response, but too bad.

Living here in South Philly all my life - more than four decades - I only remember one time someone asking before starting if you'd like your address painted on the curb. The others just did it and then asked. I guess their though was that if they asked afterward, you just couldn't say no. They should have put more thought into that, as most did indeed say no.
