Speaking of colorful neighbors, does anyone remember "Dirty Rachel", the schizophrenic that hung out around Geno's? Every now and again someone would take her back to her home and feed and clean her up, but she would go right back out again and sit and drink coffee and talk to herself about her doctor son that lived in a mansion. Wonder where she went?

WHOA! Now you're taking me back to my high school days! I remember her well, since we lived on Federal between 9th & 10th back then. How long was she around after the mid 80's?
We (my sister and I) were told she had money but was so crazy she didn't care. Lost love or something like that. Such stories! |

Ya... or whatever happens to them.
Do you remember the older gentleman who hung out at 9th & Fed, where Rim is now? He was always there, it seemed, morning through evening. Hat, suit, well dressed. My father said he had something to do with the mob and to be nice to him. I guess taking numbers or something. |

The guy that hangs around Pats name is Frankie Toe's.
He used to live around 7th and Reed. And "Dirty Rachel", man she used to make my skin crawl.

Great News! Victor's house was up for sale and has been bought by a young couple with small child. They have been renting a small place in the neighborhood and now have a home to raise their family. Funny comment from them. The first thing the husband is doing is taking down the 70's, green awning. They'll be moving in mid-November.
I'm glad to see it wasn't bought by some investor who rents to a continous flow of illegals like many of the homes in the area. They do nothing for the neighborhood. |

To each thier own, I guess. But woah... those 'illegals' (and you obviously are making a blanket statement on immigrants/hispanics/asians since I doubt you know the legal status of all the people who rent in your 'area') have done more good for some south philly neighborhoods than anyone else....certaintly more then all the irish and italians who moved out 50 years ago because they were afraid of people different from them (re: black people). take 9th street for example - it's less an italian market and more a mexican market, and thank god, there's finally life back there again, no thanks to any italians or 'legals'....these people come here and open up businesses that do plenty of good for the neighborhood and you have the marbles to say they do nothing... But thanks for showing your true colors - I can ignore your racist/close minded posting from now on. |

Ignore away wanker. I am the one living next to these people and live with their disconnected existence in my neighborhood. Not trying to assimilate, endless turnover in the houses, too many people living in the typical rowhome, absentee landlords, trash piling up outside their houses.
I am one of the decendents of Irish immigrants you state "moved out." I am still here with my current immigrant wife and my dual citizen child. This is not racism, this is fact. I am talking about my area not yours. Bella Vista you claim but you also post you live close to Rim Cafe. You've been here 5 years? Look at your adopted, new home with rose colored glasses and point your finger negatively at what you think is racism. I've lived in South Philly for 40 years. I've looked at most of your posts. You are not as loving as you claim. "(Mom spends all day in meth clinic, 'Dad' is prolly walking around point breeze looking for crack as I type this)" hungry "kensington and especially juniata 'first class neighborhoods'? pretty much white trash there." hungry |
