Given that the store remains open, I would say this thread and the persistent rumors are a testament to the gullibility of many people in South Philly.

Ha ha, I read all of these posts, and was thinking, wow- I can't believe they might close the Acme... then I get to the last post, and realize I was reading posts from 4 freaking years ago! I'm gonna guess it's not going anywhere.

About two or three years ago, the store was sold, from Albertsons to Supervalue. It's still the same old luv-a-bull Smack-me.

Actually, SUPERVALU (no "e", always in caps) purchased Albertson's, which owned (and, under a different corporate structure, somewhat still does) Acme.

The place is a complete eyesore!!!! It's filthy inside and out! I moved here 5 years ago and boycotted that store 4 1/2 years ago. You would think that store management could do something about the trash that collects on and around the property. Adios ACME! ( I can only hope and pray)

You should have been around when it was a prison....now that was scary...

It's definitely not the cleanest. However, the produce is better than Superfresh on Delaware ave. For having the name Superfresh it really has the most un-fresh produce.

I remember Gerace Bicycle shop across the street and a large open lot where the prison use to be with a wrought iron fence (?) around it.

Do you know if the municipal garage behind the Acme was ever part of the prison? It sure is built like one.
