hello!
my husband and i are long-time sp renters (where i call "midtown south philly" - between washington and snyder), but now we're looking to buy. we still want to stay in sp, but we were looking at houses below oregon (johnston, bigler) - "downtown south philly". does anyone have an info on the area down there...neighbors, crime rates, whether the locale has gotten better or worse in the past 5 years? we've specifically seen some places between 6th and 8th on johnston that we might consider. and input/info is appreciated! |

I highly recommend this area. Marconi Park and Stella Marris are like the suburb of South Philly. Houses were designed close to the resemblance of houses in NE philly, so it's slighty update to date compared to most houses in SP.
The only negative thing I know of is traffic during stadium events and amusemnt park event on 7th & Bilgler. But that's not going to matter because most houses here were built with common private driveway and a garage. If you like quiet neighborhood, walking distance to sport events, recreational parks, shopping plaza (24hr Pathmark, Kmart, etc), this is the place to buy. MPZ out, Quote:

thanks for all the input. we're going forward with the house on johnston, because of the great location, the fact that we'd actually have a garage/driveway, and i spoke to a couple of the neighbors who said nothing but good things about the block.
MarconiParkRez - it's funny that you call it the suburbs of sp, because that's exactly how my husband described it when he saw it. thanks everyone! |

But I think the original poster was talking about the "original neighborhood," not the new construction. |

No problem. And if you're planning to rent it out in the future, there's no need to worry because demand is pretty high in this neighborhood. I don't live there anymore, but I stop by regularly to collect rent. The reason for the high demand because there are a lot of houses still being owned by elderly folks and they are hestitant to sell/rent out their home eventhough the market is good for them now.
Here are some info on the area: https://www.southphillyreview.com/vi...le.php?id=2570 MPZ out, Quote:
