I prefer Lowe's but really like Behr paint. I recently ordered a cabinet from the Home Depot on Delaware Ave. When it came in they called me twice to tell me it was there. I showed up to get it and waited for an hour as they tried to locate it in the warehouse. They told me it was probably "behind a bunch of stuff" and to come back the next day. My husband went back and waited for quite some time--they still couldn't locate it. We got our money back and ordered the cabinet with no problem from one of their stores in Jersey. Needless to say, we haven't been back. I've never been to the one on Oregon--hopefully it's better.

I find that it is also easier to get to the Oregon Avenue location due to the heavier traffic on Delaware Ave. The Quatermaster plaza is a nice addition to that part of the city. And as I am in the middle of a huge suburban home rennovation, I have found that I am beginning to prefer Lowe's for all of the finishing details of the house. More selection and nicer stuff in that area. |

though lowes might be cleaner and brighter, in a head to head comparison on materials, home depot was cheaper by 10-15% on all fasteners and hardware. on lumber and drywall, they were exactly the same price. it was hard to price shop their "decorating" items so i gave up....
lowes primary target shopper is the suburban client who is renovating. home depot is focusing on the trades first, renovators second. and that isn't changing as witness hd's last acquisition. that said, no matter what, both hd stores are a mess-poor inventory management, clueless help and plenty of customer "dis"-service...hd/oregon avenue just fired 6 cashiers and the top 2 men from their pro desk for stealing. cheating the store out of money using gift cards...

To back up Fairmounterpolo, Lowe's seems to carry the top-notch version or brand of decorative items. Home Depot has much more variety, at least pricewise. So Lowe's is nicer, but you pay for it.
The Oregon Ave HD is much easier to shop. The Columbus Blvd location is ALWAYS crowded, and the parking lot is a real pain to navigate. One cool thing about Lowe's -- on Friday nights they wheel floor model and as-is appliances out by the appliance department. The items are sometimes banged up, but usually just opened box or older models marked down. It's first come, first serve... I have seen the same thing at suburban locations, as well as Columbus Blvd. |
