Default Recycle Bank, This would be nice in South Philly

Philadelphia’s Civic Summit on Recycling

Thursday, March 2nd 7:30 to 9:30 pm
Friends Select School
17th Street & Ben Franklin Parkway

As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, Philadelphia
Weekly, City Paper and Fox News: a City-sponsored curbside recycling
pilot run by Recycle Bank in Chestnut Hill and West Oak Lane rewards
residents with up to $400 a year in shopping coupons for recycling.
Coupons can be redeemed at over 100 businesses. It's a win-win for
residents, businesses and our environment.

This pilot is an absolute success. Recycling participation has increased
from 5% to more than 80%. Despite its success the City of Philadelphia
almost scrapped the program. Fortunately, pressure from community and
business leaders compelled the City to extend the pilot another year,
expanding it to include an additional 10,000 households

There are still more than 500,000 households to go.

Default Find out how to get RecycleBank

I tried posting this in all the neighborhood threads yesterday, but I got flagged for duplicate postings. Unfortunately, I don't think many people read the Events thread, where it ended up.

Anyway, if you want RecycleBank in your neighborhood- here's your chance to fight for it. My contact info is below if you want more info-

Are there any places such as in Southwest Phila where you can bring recyles if you miss your day or are there arny private recyling companies that take newspapers. I get the NY times and the Inquirer delivered so i usually have alot of paper to go out and wouldn't mind getting a few dollars back

Right now, the Recycle Bank is a pilot program in Chestnut Hill and one other neighborhood (I forget which). The petition atRecyclenowphiladelphia is to get it going citywide. I like this idea.

So am I getting this right, there is no recycling program in Philadelphia? All trash is picked up once a week and there is no separation of trash? Is there a place where you can bring it since they don't collect it?

Looking forward to seeing what happens at the summit. Even though we don't live there yet, I may try to attend. I never even thought Philly wouldn't recycle, wow...thought all cities did.

No. You misunderstand.

There is a recycling program in Philadelphia. It is bi-weekly collection, and they only take mixed-paper, glass, and metal containers. However, the number of recycling households is pathetically low city-wide. This is a program to help encourage more people to do it.

Since Philadelphia's recycling program sucks and doesn't accept plastics, there is the Jefferson Square program the first Saturday of every month. The 1 and 2 refer to the number usually at the bottom of the plastic container inside the recycling symbol. I have been dropping of my plastics since I moved into the area. I think its a great program set up by this group

Friends of Jefferson Square Park/Queen Village Neighbors Association
Washington Avenue at Front Street under I-95
1st Saturday
10am to 12:30pm
Materials Accepted: Residential mixed paper and plastics 1 & 2
