Default More Positive Action Last Night

We had a terrific neighborhood meeting last night at Guerin Rec!

The Capital Program Office sent a rep with drawings of improvements to the rec center planned to begin in April 06. Neighbors (new guard & old school) raised a lot of good points for consideration. Reps from the Dept of Recreation were there, too, and their interest & attention to the momentum building in our neighborhood was much appreciated.

A gentleman named Arthur Potts described the benefits of organizing a Town Watch group, especially to help protect the $250K investment in the Rec Center. Looks like motivated neighbors will be organizing an orientation session soon.

Recent greening efforts at the DiSilvestro playground & neighboring vicinity were described to help promote interest in Tree Tender opportunities and other programs that are currently being organized on our blocks in conjunction with the Horticultural Society.

The 2100 block of 16th St then proceeded with their block association meeting, led by their very active Block Captain.

It was a great meeting in general. I was happy to meet a lot of new people who are interested in being a part of the positive change movement in our neighborhood. Naturally, there was some little debate that reflected the cynicism and general skepticism of people who have lived here a long time and seen promises made & broken in this area. I hope they left a little better informed about all of the changes underway and maybe a little encouraged by it.

Mostly, though, it was a great exchange of information. I left feeling confident that there are more marconi monsters working to push this neighborhood up than chief-whatevers holding us back.

Default Is this post for real?

Was there really a meeting last night? Why wasn't it posted on the blog?

If it did happen, great! I'm glad to hear some positive things.

Great news! I didn't know those speakers were going to be there, nor did I realize the meeting was open to all, I thought it was the 2100 block of 16th Street's regular monthly block meeting. Darn, I would have liked to attend!

I'm currently planning my February block meeting and I'd love to have those people come back out and talk to my neighbors, as well as anyone else who would like to attend. I've e-mailed the person on 16th Street who is in charge of setting up her street's block meetings for the speaker's contact information. As soon as I set the meeting up, I'll post it.

Talking Very real meeting

Mr. Eddiejams,
I certainly didn't take time to post details of an imaginary meeting! If I had, I would have been more creative about the outcomes--perhaps a million dollar investment in the rec center instead of a mere $250K, total harmony and agreement on all issues, and a closing round of Kumbaya.

I'm not sure that the organizers felt that the meeting needed to be posted on this blog. I found out about it because a flyer was slipped through my mail slot (also not imaginary). I informed a few friends in the neighborhood, and we all attended together. At least one person there requested that future meetings be more broadly publicized, and the organizers agreed to that.

We've planned our block meeting, and are having most of the same speakers come out and talk to us about the exciting developments to this area. If anyone is interested in attending, please PM me for the details.
