Arrow Role of Civic Associations ... pennsport, Bella vista, Passyunk, Society Hill, etc

The discussion is about what Civic Associations are and how they can help neighbors.

A month or so ago, I ran into Dick Ostrander who is one of the movers and shakers in my area of Society Hill. Dick had done a lot of polical organizing for South Street Head House District and for Society Hill.

So there we were shaking our heads looking at a huge storage bin (dumpster size) and bemoaning why the Streets Department would not simply remove it. It had been at 7th and Addision since the summer, loaded with trash, refuse, garbage and perhaps rats.

This is Philadelphia.

After seeing Johnny Doc at work and REACHING OUT neighbor to neighbor, I am slightly more tolerant of Philadelphia Old Style politics.

Anyone concur?

Someone wrote,

Pennsport Civic Association?

Does it have any role in the neighborhood, or is it just an outlet for a well-known, potential mayoral candidate? I find it very odd that there is no elected leadership or meeting minutes.

Hello!
Actually its a very interesting group and its more about what covic associations should be. There is a sense of comraderie and people looking out for people. They discuss neighborhood problems and how to solve them.

More in my next thread ......

passyunk civic association (passyunk.org) seems to be a decent organization.
I've been going to every meeting and find it a concerned and active group of
folks from the neighborhood. I'm certianly not running for office and dont know of anyone that is; we're just citizens concerned for our neighborhood.
The only critisism I have is that the group is not very diverse. White middle class pseudo-yuppies like myself; not a very representative cross section of the community....sigh....I guess that's what gentrification is about. Either way, why not go to a meeting and see what you think of it. I found them to
be worthwhile and will continue to attend.

Yup I agree. Go to the meeting and MEET UP with some neighbors, for a good solid neighborhood. My question is ..... where did they get the moniker ...... Passyunk Square Triangle? Is is really because of Geno's?

I thought passyunk square is park that is between wharton/reed and 12/13th.
As for the triangle part...who knows, I thought it was broad, and washington
with passyunk ave being the hypotenuse (check google maps). maybe its
wash to tasker/broad to 6th is a big rectangle and passyunk cuts it into 2
triangles? but genos is on a triangular corner. who knows

Yes, Passyunk Square is the park at 12th and Wharton, more recently known as Columbus park. I believe the neighborhood is named after this park.

The "dont-take-anything-serious" side of me giggles, the PC side thinks this comment is about as funny as hearing neighbors talk about "the color-ed's, not funny at all.

The PSCA has helped me to enjoy living in the city and being a member of my community in ways I never imagined I would before I moved there. Improving the neighborhood in which you live can be a real challenge, but an interesting one. I've found that the more active I've become, the more I've learned to appreciate the dynamics of urban living, and the more I love where I live.

I agree about the lack diversity in the the group, though, especially since there is a substantial Vietnamese and Asian population in the area. It would be wonderful to have a more integrated mix of people, especially one that's more representative of the community as a whole. But, yes, maybe that's only possible in a perfect world...

I've never heard anyone refer to Passyunk Square as "Passyunk Square Triangle" except Joely. I could be completely wrong, but I don't think it's a moniker for the neighborhood at all.

Is something stopping them from going, or do they just not care?

Don't know. Maybe they feel excluded? I feel like it may be a good idea for the PSCA to do some reaching out to those groups somehow.
