I was saddened to learn in this morning's Inquirer that Donna Bond, long time neighborhood resident, Democratic committeewoman, and cleanup person extraordinaire, was shot and killed yesterday by the 81 year old wheelchair bound man for whom she was caring after he suffered a stroke.
Picture of Donna with her cleanup crew at http://www.southphillyblocks.org/chr.../0707group.jpg She's just to my left (I'm the "American Gothic" one with the broom and the white cap) in this photo, which serves as my user picture. We pushed a lot of grocery carts full of tools and bags together back in the day. She had a hearty laugh, infectious good humor, a uniformly positive outloook, and an appetite for hard work. She lived near 18th and Fitzwater but for the past two years was staying with this elderly former neighbor in the Southwark high-rise at 4th and Carpenter. This is a great loss.
