Default Regatta on the Lower Schuylkill 10/22

In Friday's Inquirer:

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/new...l/12777737.htm

An October 22 regatta (Bartram's Gardens north to Race Street, or possibly vice versa) is being sponsored by Toll Brothers to help promote the "Schuylkill Banks" concept of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation.

IT should be intersting considering that there aren't any facilities like on the "upper" side of the river (above the Fairmount Dam)

Also, the rowers will not be anywhere near as familiar with the course as the normal Twin Bridges to the Grandstands run that they practice each and every day.

Plus, Penn students have put as many as 5 sets of football uprights into the river at South Street over the years. I hope that they are deep enough.

I think the organizers know most of that other stuff, but this is a little scary. On the other hand, Bartram's Gardens has been participating in some "cruise ship" runs up the Schuylkill, so perhaps they know the hazards there as well.

Bartram's has done river cruises for the past 2 years. I've done it twice. Very interesting, if not "beautiful" in the standard sense. But well worth it.

I wouldn't swim in the lower Schuylkill, but boating on it is fine. I'm intrigued by this regatta.

I'm bemused by the folks who fish in the lower Schuylkill and take their catch home.

Like you, I'm intrigued. If I have some free time that day, I hope to go. I'm assuming that Schuylkill River Development will have further information available on its website.

The past couple of days, there has been a stream of trash (far more than the usual anyway) along the eastern coastline of the river. Is this from the construction of what I assume is a launching area? Or is there something funky going on further upriver?

I've only really seen it as it passes under the South St bridge, but it looks like it extends at least to the Walnut St bridge. It could make this regatta less than beautiful. I hope it goes back to normal soon. I had seen a lot of non-seagull birds moving in, and now it's all seagulls and pigeons again.

I haven't been up that way, but will hope that it gets cleaned up. The rain this week (assuming we get some) may wash it downriver.

One of the things that I like about the regatta is that Toll is paying for it. I don't think they've had a history of public spiritedness in their suburban developments, so I am hoping they are getting a sense of the importance of community building for an urban developer.

I would have if the weather hadn't been so crummy. Too bad. I hope they do it again next year.

As an ex-rower I can tell you that I wouldn't want to race on a course with that many hard turns and bridges. The upper is bad enough.

When you are turning you have to pull harder on one side. With a sweep, (one person one oar on one side) one person will have to work harder than another, in schulling (one person, two oars) one of your arms will start to fatigue faster than the other.
